The base is a basic 8x12 wooden plaque
from Michaels. Before adding anything I
sealed it with some spray Urethane. I used
some packing Styrofoam and some green
florist’s Foam to create a small rise and
rock outcropping for the Spider to climb on.
The Florist’s Foam was rounded, carved
and gouged to give it a rocky surface, then
the foam was sealed with Liquitex Gesso.
The groundwork was built up and blended
with a layer of Celluclay. I made sure to
insert a bit of wire to keep the hole open for
Superman’s support wire. While the
Celluclay was wet, I made impressions in
it with Superman’s feet to make it look like
he really dug into the dirt hurling the Scorpion.

When the Celluclay was dry I coated it with Liquitex Gesso and sprinkled on real actual dirt from
a local playground while it was still wet. I also added some small rocks and pebbles and glued them in with Elmer’s White Glue. The base was painted with the two-handed spray can method
--a can of tan in one hand and a can of rust color primer in the other. They were sprayed simultaneously and alternately to get a nice mix of color. After that, the rocks and sand were washed and drybrushed in various shades of brown and tan.

Here’s a closer look at how some of the final details turned out, as well as a look at that
cover of Action Comics that up until this point existed only in my imagination.
