1/20 Gans Salvage Ma.k Diorama - COMPLETE - pics on p7
Okay time for a new project, had a Gans for a long time now, it was the first model that got me into the Ma.k universe and I've finally come up with an idea for it.
This is the rough dio plan sketch
The gans is going to be wrecked and a crew in a modified pick up is going to be salvaging it, for the truck I'm going to use a lindberg syclone
Most major thing I'll need to do with it is to make a gun turret with a mounted machine gun, so I need to cut a hole in the roof. I've got some bevelled metal rings I found at work which will be the rim and two more pressed together later will form the mounting ring for the gun I'll make
For now I'm starting to get the head together which I'll show being loaded into the back of the truck by the two man crew, with damage and bits hanging out of it
Not much to show for now but just wanted to outline the idea and crack on with the wip.
Thanks for looking, more soon

Just a question on the rough sketch. Is the truck stopped on a bridge over a creek? If so, you may want to consider angling the bridge a bit, so the truck is not parallel to the edge of the base. The overall aesthetics will improve if you angle the truck to the base. It will also give you more room on the back side for a few odds and ends to give the overall atmosphere of the diorama some additional character. Behind the truck would also be a nice place for a "surprise" - a little bit of humor or something real nasty to spice up the presentation.
Good luck with it.
Good luck with it.

Cool! I didn't know there we maschinen Krueger folks here. I'm a loooong time gk modeler, but pretty new to Ma K. It's captured my imagination. Guess I'm about twenty years late to the game! Lookin forward to your build.
What figures will you use?
Last weekend I kibashed this little lady for fun.

When you are hooked on the Maschinenkrieger stuff, be prepared to meet some of the coolest kits available! Besides the Gans get yourself a Kroete and a Jerry/Super Jerry. My absolute favorite is the Nutrocker Tank. I love this stuff, too and Hunter did some exeptional work here in the forum (besides his other stuff which is cool, too!). So welcome to the Maschinenkrieger gang and hopefully, you will show some stuff of your build ups and ideas too!

I never would have thought to combine MaK with those forlorn old Lindberg 1/20 automobiles; good idea!

Yeah the sketch isn't set in stone, its very rough, by the time I finish my dioramas they usually look quite different from how the "plan" started out!gonzo_miniatures wrote:Just a question on the rough sketch. How is the law? No diorama should have parallel lines to anything showing on it! Thats the reason why I only build rund objects and ball like robots ! No, but it is a cool idea so the eye can be tricked. Your idea sounds really interesting and I am hooked, so count me in as usual! I am very intereste in what figures you will use, means how you kitbash or sculpt them!

I'll be bashing figures from some tamiya pit crew figures, and modding them with some greenstuff

Yeah, the good ole Pit Team... Heck, I don´t even know if it´s still available. What I know is, that Fujimi did two racing team sets in 1:20, too...

Re: 1/20 Gans Salvage Ma.k Diorama - WIP
Yeah the 1/20 standard! I've got a few figures left over from when I bashed this figure for my scopedog junkyard dio
I think I'm going for a cold weather look, parker jackets with hoods and scarves
For now I've got the hole for the mounted gun drilled position cut out, held my metal ring in place and scribed around the inside edge
Then after much drilling and swearing (the lindberg styrene is a bit hard and brittle) I removed the bulk of the material from within my circular mark and then used a grinder tool on my dremel to neaten it up.
This is my beveled ring in place, next I'll ca glue it on and use some squadron to fill the gap between it and the roof
I am starting to get all the gans bits together, focusing mainly on the truck for now, as there will be some internal bits I'll have to make for the gans but I'm not 100% nailed down what bits will be exposed with damage yet.
But one thing I definitely want is for the hump bit from the front of the gans head hanging extruded with a mess of wires behind it. A stroke of luck is that the smaller hoops I have are a perfect fit for the circumference of the dome base.
One will be attached here, another on the dome piece, and 1 maybe 2 surrounding the mess of wires as if they were rings to hold the large loom of cables in place or something.
Next up I'll continue to work on the truck, and get some gans bits glued together ready for putty and sanding
Thanks for looking more soon

Re: 1/20 Gans Salvage Ma.k Diorama - WIP
The head of the Neuspotter... There is so much room to add something of interest, mainly inside stuff!
How do you dremel plastic? When I try it it does not work as good as I expect. Do I dremel with high speed, the plasic melts and wraps around the dremel, do I work at low speed, not enough material will me removed ! Weird...
Keep the fluids running, this here looks really good and interesting!

Yeah that's pretty much happens when i do it Frank! I just drilled lots of holes first around the edge, so there are only small bits to grind through, then smooth off and finish the edge with a larger circumference coarse sanding drum

Re: 1/20 Gans Salvage Ma.k Diorama - WIP
Had a nice afternoon yesterday getting the chassis of the truck together in the shed, a lot more fiddly than I thought it would be. I've left a few bits off as most of it on the engine wont be seen. I'm just doing enough so it looks correct if you peer through the wheel arch and the underside stuff just in case.
Got the inner tub in, but haven't glued in the chairs or dash yet of course for easy painting. Haven't said yet but the windows are going to be armor plated with some wide mesh covered slits, so I'm most of the inside isn't going to be visible, so I'll be painting them but not going to go nuts with super detailing.
Next job is to start thinking about the mods to the exterior, I've got a 1/24 italieri truck accessories set, scale is out a bit but its for big trucks so it looks right which is good, and it has some cool bits and bobs on it
I'm also not going to be putting any of the stock lights on it, they will be done as if covered over/removed, so I need some and so I'm using this light rig, was thinking about putting in the front
But I like how it looks on the roof, just have to see how if I can still fit my mounted gun rig on, and once I've put the front bumper detail on I'll add a bull bar to it
So its all coming along, next up I'll get some exterior detail on, and will prime the inner & chassis.
Thanks for looking, more soon

In my opinion, the lights would look more spot on when installed on the roof! And the detailing of the chassis is cool, not too overdone but enough to keep the interest alive. I guess, you will go crazy with painting and weathering here! Top till now!

Re: 1/20 Gans Salvage Ma.k Diorama - WIP
Thanks Frank! I did want to do it that way but it does interfere with my turret plans, so I'm back to putting it on the front.
Got the hood and front pieces on the cab, except for the scoop/bumper, partly to fit on my new bullbar light rig but also because I'm not adding the body-kit pieces to it (I want it to look more like a generic work horse) and the side wheel arch bits fit onto the ends so it doesn't sit flush and looks odd being there without it
For the bullbar I'm using a the bottom part of a piece from my truck accessories set
This is how the light bit will sit on it, as you can see I'm going to have to trim it down a tad
Before I sort that I also got the bevel ring that surrounds my hole in the roof glued into place
Filled the gap in with greenstuff and smoothed it over
Then I put a ring of greenstuff round the outside edge and made a weld seam with a scripe tool
So next up I'll get the bullbar trimmed down and the lights attached
Thanks for looking, more soon

Yep, the lights mounted this way look good anyway, so no need to put them on the roof. A heavy mounted weapon would look even cooler, if you plan to install one. In 1:20 there is no big way to find something. Wanna scratch something (I have a kind of an M-113 ACAV cuppola style in mind, MG with shield. Or that way) Or a BUSHMASTER, harhar!
