Where to buy styrene glue...TENAX 7 ??
I love the Tenax 7 welding glue for styrene....have they stopped making it?
I can't find it.
Any else use something different?

Re: Where to buy styrene glue...TENAX 7 ??
It goes in and of production all the time. From what I've heard it's made by a one man show but I've also heard that it's gone for good this time. So take that with a grain of salt if you like because it's all hearsay.
I LOVE it too and it's my top choice. No wearing your fingers out holding parts that are under pressure for 15 min.! My second choice (now my first?) is Tamiya thin, but doesn't set up near as fast as Tenax. But it's still GREAT glue. Have you tried it?
WORD OF WARNING: it's called "Thin" for a reason and travels a long way along a seam through capillary action so watch out for it running under your fingers!!

I've heard that MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) works just as good. You can find it in Home Depot or Lowes by the paint thinner and solvents.

I just picked up a 946ml (1 US quart) can of MEK at Canadian Tire for CDN$12.99+tax. compare that to 1oz (29ml) of Testor's liquid cement (which is MEK-based) for about CDN$5.00+tax. That's 32.6 times the volume for 2.6 times the price!

You can buy dichlormethane relatively on eBay, which is same stuff as Tenax w/o the price, but it evaporates like a dickens (from a sealed metal quart can), and burns skin if you get it on you.
MEK works well, if not as fast (not as crazy thin as Tenax), and doesn't evaporate nearly as fast. You can also make a sprue/MEK slurry to use as a filler, which is a great thing as the filled area then sands at the same rate as the rest of the plastic.

Late to the party on this.... so MEK is the same thing as Tenax 7... so just using a paint brush along the seam and it does the same thing?

PlasticWeld is another name for the same thing by another company. Sold at many hobby shops.
MicroMart sells 'Same Stuff'. Again, the same thing.
I've tried all three and they are all pretty much the same.

When I worked at ERTL, the guys in the model shop turned me onto methylene chloride. They switched from this to MEK because it was less nasty. If you have a floor cleaning supply house close by (some place that carries floor strippers), you can still find MC. I buy it by the gallon and it lasts for years as long as you remember to seal it when done. Melts plastic together.Chuck wrote:I've heard that MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) works just as good. Only thing to remember is that methylene chloride is a carcinogen and was banned from industrial use in the 1980's for most cleaning applications. that being said, I love Tenex
