1/12 Horta from Star Trek

Re: 1/12 Horta from Star Trek
Thanks!
Hands are an issue here. I don't have enough. The styrene kit hands are holding a poorly molded P2 and Comm. I have one resin hand and 2 very nice resin hands holding very nicely molded P2 and comm.
I decided to try and modify the styrene hand holding the comm to be holding the PXK circulating pump.
I ground out the comm with my motor tool and built a circulating pump.
The pump should have 5 or 6 inner tubes, but I can only fit 4 in with the hand holding it.

Spock is mostly the old AMT kit.
I changed his position from the Snakes kit pose to more of a crouching pose.
I used boiling water to re bend the legs and one shoe.
Once they were reshaped they needed some surgery. The Motor tool helped.
Sculpting putty next:
Then the rest goes together.
Construction on Spock is mostly complete. I think I'm down to sanding.
And I dull coated Kirks shirt, sprayed his pants semi gloss black then brush painted the boots gloss.
Kirks head and hands are next.
Brown hair, flesh, white/light brown/and black for the eyes.
This is the 1st pass, I'll revisit it after everything drys.

Is that an after-market, more accurate Spock head as well?

No, thats the AMT kit head. I tried to get the JT Graphics Spock head but its sold out everywhere I looked.
The kit head is not bad, but if I had the choice I would have gone with the resin one.
Kirks boots are now gloss black and I've glosses where Kirks rank braids and shirt insignia will go for decaling.

The phaser is done and the decals are on Kirk.
I'm still not happy with Kirks eyes.

In any case, it's progressing !
Looking forward to seeing what's next ...

Spock is done, sort of. When the JT Graphics resin head becomes available I might swap it in. I'm also not really happy with the right
hand I made, but I think it's the best I can do for now.
The background is done also, brining this build to completion. There is more I could do, but I think its time to move on.
Thanks for following and all the help!

Re: 1/12 Horta from Star Trek
A suggestion that might help this scene work even better: Build up a second level of "earth" on the base so that the Horta is sitting higher than Spock - like at the edge of a mound, so that when Spock kneels he is at her level (as in the episode). Just a thought ...

Re: 1/12 Horta from Star Trek
Good idea. I got Spock about as low as I could with out cutting him and re-sculpting his legs.

Re: 1/12 Horta from Star Trek
Styrene is a real pain in the you-know-what to try to do that with. Whenever you get the new Spock head I would just tilt it slightly down so it appears he is looking at the Horta.mach7 wrote:Good idea. I got Spock about as low as I could with out cutting him and re-sculpting his legs.
The more I think about it the more I like the idea of building a "mound" for the Horta to be perched on as Spock "mind-melds". I think it will add to the authenticity of the dio too (being that its going on inside endless mining tunnels) ... make sure you have some rock/sand debris around the mound as well, for that same reason ...
Can't wait to see what you do with it!
PS Kirk looks absolutely dynamite - tense pose, tense look on his face - masterful paint up!!!

Re: 1/12 Horta from Star Trek
Good ideas! I could probably work NO KILL I onto the raised platform. I like the head tilt for Spock! I should have thought of it for this head.
Thanks For your comments!
I'm not 100% happy with Kirks eyes either, but the rest of him I'm very happy with.
I'm not normally a figure guy, I'm still learning. They can be very rewarding.

I love all the ideas.
And I love watching this whole thing progress.
It lots of fun watching the creative process unfold.
