The glow plastic appreciation thread.

#1 Post by tay666 »

So, how many glow fans do we have around here?

I know it was a gimmick, but it sure worked on me. I was fascinated by glow kits in the 70's.
I am stoked about the recent use of glow in a lot of kits.
I love glow kits. I love figuring out ways to incorporate the glow in the build/paint.

Great thread to start Trevor!!
I'm a glow fan too because I love gimmicks I guess, plus it gave extra parts in most kits. I am always thinking the same - how to incorporate the glow into the finished piece.

I never understood the appeal at all of glow in the dark stuff then....someone bought me a glow in the dark full size human skull......then I got it!!!

Loved my glow on the dark skull.

I just think we should take the warning labels off of everything and let the problem take care of itself.

I had both the Godzilla and King Kong Aurora kits with "glow in the dark" heads in the early 1970s. I think they are cool to look at as you go to sleep.

(Disclaimer: I currently have the glow in the dark Martian from the original "War of The Worlds" on my nightstand next to my bed - and the 13" Medicom glow in the dark blue marbled Harryhausen Cyclops next to it. Still looking for the glow in the dark Talos to put next to them.

Sometimes I'll take them into the bathroom 10 minutes before bedtime and hold them close to the light to "charge" them before I put them back on the nightstand and turn out the lights. Then I sneak peeks at them as I fall asleep. (Yes, I have a VERY indulgent wife!!! :bgrin: )

If you're in the hobby, you're still a kid at heart, no matter what your age. And proud of it. :reddance:

I had several glow kits back in the day.
Mainly those haunted glow heads from MPC.
Lots of glow stuff from boxes of cereal too.
But my fondest memories of glow are the teeth and eyes from the Aurora Tyrannosaurus Rex. That thing stood just tall enough to see over the top of my mattress, so it would be 'looking' at me as I fell asleep.
(like some strange guardian angel :D )

I am curious. Has anyone tried putting an UV LED inside a glow kit to make it glow?
The thought came to me at work the other day, but I haven't had a chance to test it to see if it would work.

Yeah. I'm gonna try that little UV flashlight that came with my Godzilla lighting kit, and see what it does on the inside of one of the glow heads.
Not sure if light from within, will make the exterior glow or not.

Yeah, and I forgot about trying it when I was down at the bench today.

Oh well, maybe sometime this week.

I never even saw a MOTM kit when I was a kid.
Heck, there was only one store in my city that even had Monster Scenes.

Yeah, we didn't have any hobby stores.
The places we got models were the local corner stores. Now that I think about it, it's kind of surprising any of the stores still had Monster Scenes. I would have been shopping around 75/76.
So, that particular store must have gotten a shipment that took forever for them to sell.
I had to walk, or ride my bike half way across town to get there. Which, at 8 years old, my parents weren't willing to let me do very often. Only when I was with friends.

In the NYC of the early 1970s, I bought my Aurora kits at corner coffee/newspaper shop stores in Queens that would also have a section filled with plastic model kits, Aurora most prominent among them (as best as I can recall almost 50 years later :usa: ) ... I can almost smell the aroma of the coffee, burgers, and newsprint all mixing together as I ogled all of those crazy, wild-looking models ... I know I had Kong and Godzilla, as well as the "Horned Beasts" (Trike & Styracosaurus) ... not 100% sure about the TRex but almost certain I had the Allosaurus ... wonder if I have any old faded photos of that shelf down in the garage in some box ....

Oh where did the time go .... :-k :lol2:

Trev,That same Hobbystore in the basement is like going back in time to the 70's.I think posted it on the partspit facebook while back cause a member there was able to get the MPC Giant wasp sealed for decent price 8) .But Two-guys dept also had alot of the Aurora kits up on the shelf till about 78.They were mainly way in the back with Mego mostly dominating the shelves along with Kenner.

Speak of the (Glow) devil  - I just managed to win a "Glow in the dark" 'WF-exclusive' Medicom Talos (which I will pose next to his Cyclops counterpart). Been on the lookout for it for 2 years, since I just missed on one of the initial crop of 2 or 3 that hit the radar following Winter WF 2019 Japan. Collecting life is good right now. Next year - the buildups will start again, if all goes according to plan.

I like the concept of glow kits much better than the reality. I'd love to see some photos of how folks have integrated the glow features into the overall model. Just seems if you don't paint the glow parts, they lose most of their definition under lit conditions and the painted parts lose their definition under dark conditions.

Although not technically 'glow' kits, I think the luminators look cool when hit with a blacklight.

Trev - If you go to the Billiken company site, then click the "Toys" link, you'll see some KAIJU Glow Kits to make your mouth water - Rodan in particular .... (It was posted on the other thread about updating the producers list) ...

I for one was never a fan. I still am not. I built a "Glow" Mummy's Chariot for a friend and it was a bitch to seam that stuff. The kit is already a pain to seam and the glow plastic made it worse. I do like the nostalgia aspect of it though and also like what Atlantis is doing with the "Glow" reissues.
