The silly episodes are often among the best. A consistently grim Doctor would be depressing after awhile, and not attractive to the youngest viewers.
Also this incarnation of the Doctor appears to have a lot more to learn about himself, few memories were carried over and some knowledge will have to come in the form of recovered memory.
The Doctor's mind was overwhelmed by the events of the Matt Smith Doctor's adventures, and ages of lonelyness as that Doctor aged much more than previous incarnations. In a way this Doctor seems to suffer a bit of Alzheimers or senile dementia that will take time to sort out.
I have a feeling that as the Doctor recovers his faculties he will take on a less aged appearance, not youthful but a bit younger than he seems to be now.
Now Saturday's episode was GOOD!!! On par w/ the Angels and that
'thing outta the corner of your eye' stuff!!
Spoiler:
...was a little confused by Clara leaving the toy soldier on the boys
bed at the end. Was left thinking, 'how did it get into that box at the
home for Page to play with?'
How do you only have two days to get something finished when you have a time machine. Or was the Doctor trying to make the situation more intense to remind Clara of his value? Not sure I like the whole jealous Time Lord thing. He needs a weekend with River.
Excellent moment from tonight's Christmas Special. Overall I enjoyed it. A wonderful story filled with Santa Clause, Aliens, dreams, a madman in a blue box, Christmas Miracles and face huggers... sort of. What wasn't to love?
I thought it was one of the better Christmas specials, and I'm still really enjoying Capaldi. He's obviously polarizing and not everyone's cup of tea, but curmudgeonly doctors have always held a place in my heart.
Now open up the Satan Pit, John!

I have to say that all the concentration on the Clara character detracts from the stories themselves. The Companions and their back story have always been a vital element but too much of these recent stories have taken it to the extreme.
Companions should be expendable. They've certainly expended a few in the past. Some just go their own way. Clara doesn't seem to have her own way though.
They should either do something definitive with her character or just let her get snuffed in some spectacular manner.
We need a break from the impossible girl. Let some new comer accompany the Dr for a few episodes. Someone more ordinary.

Seriously? I hated Adric as much as anyone, but at least his death had some meaning. If the Doctor considers humans (or whoever else he's traveling with) as expendable and a means to an end, then he's no better than the Master or any other Timelord. The fact that he cares distinguishes him from most of his race, and lends gravitas when one of them inevitably leaves him. I'm not disagreeing that Clara leaving would be a good thing, but I wouldn't want to see her or any companion thrown away lightly. I look at the latest episode as the real conclusion of Capaldi's regeneration, and coming to terms with his ability and need to make connections with others. That's going to make it so much worse for the Doctor when Clara does leave - probably soon in the new season.
