Twin Peaks - with spoilers

#1 Post by tay666 »

Lynch is back baby!

Oh man, this show is so messed up, I loved it!

I figured there is no way to have a Twin Peaks thread without spoilers, because we are going to want to talk about what happened, and what the heck it might mean.

The first four episodes are quite the roller coaster ride - jumping between horror and the quirky comedy the show was known for. It certainly reminded me of how groundbreaking the series was, and how many shows that followed owe it a debt. Watching the first two episodes, I was left with the impression that Lynch felt he was now given license to push things are far as he wanted - less so episodes 3 and 4, which stuck closer to his penchant for finding amusement in the mundane.

I was curious how they were going to deal with the passing of Frank Silva, an integral part of the series. Well now, we know. In a way, Mr. C is creepier while still being on the nose. They've managed to work in a number of other key actors who have passed as well. The Log Lady, Major Briggs, and even Phillip Jeffries have figured into the plot so far.

Since the original series was so polarizing (especially the last season) I expect this one to be no different. You'll love it or hate it.

I forgot to mention. Silly me, thought I would actually be able to get some modeling done while watching the show :rolf:
I completely forgot that you can't look away when watching an episode of Twin Peaks.
And since it is now on Showtime, there aren't even any commercials.
Between the subtitles in the Black Lodge and having to pay attention to all the little details in a scene not much modeling got done.

This show is so aggravating, and so totally enthralling all at the same time!

Just like the original.

The weirdness just sucks you in waiting to see what will happen next.
But it also drives you crazy trying to figure out how it all connects, or if it connects at all.

It doesn't help that my memory sucks, and sometimes I can't remember if one of the characters is brand new, or someone we've seen before that I can't remember.
Like, who was that woman that got stabbed at the end of the last ep?
And how is she connected with Dougie?

There are so many questions, and not one answer in sight yet.
Kind of like Lost, but I have a belief that Lynch has this all plotted out, and we will all get the answers he wants us to have.

Wow!
Last night's ep was great!
Finally, some of these threads are starting to connect.
Things might not be making any sense yet, but at least there is the appearance of cohesiveness.
And it was fun to actually spend a decent amount of time in Twin Peaks for a change.
To me, that is what has been missing the most.

Love the old show and really loving this. Even if it is frustrating waiting for Coop to get his bearings back. LOL
I really like how Lynch is paying tribute to the actors who are no longer with us, and even getting some things filmed before there demise.
I know a lot of people hated it but I am still laughing at Wally Brando.
I'm also currently reading The Secret History of Twin Peaks: A Novel. Pretty neat.
Going to have to reread Laura Palmers Diary and see if I can find Dale Coopers diary. DC's diary was not available in Canada when it came out in the 90's. Had an acquaintance that drove to Minnesota to get one and I got to read it. Really curious how my older and (somewhat) wiser self would interpret them now.

I thought it was hilarious. I don't know how they could keep straight faces shooting that scene.

I didn't love that scene, but it didn't bother me either.
It was goofy, and fits well with the rest of the odd-ball characters on this show.

I've been loving the series return. Huge fan of the original and I can't wait to see how it plays out. My guess that the evil wraith like spirit that clawed off the faces of the young couple is Laura Palmer's alternate self.

:rolf: Well my first reaction was that Lynch was taking the piss - because he can. But I rolled with it. Here's my take...

Bob was born out of (what was at the time) a tremendous act of violence. He gestated for 11 years and emerged as that plague thing (locust/frog). The ash men are apparently his attendants or servitors, and showed up to incapacitate the townies, allowing him to take one of them over. The Giant sent an opposing spirit to Earth to fight against Bob. I'm guessing we'll see what comes of that in a coming episode, but it ultimately ends up in Laura and allows her to resist Bob. Maybe it ends up in Coop? Who knows.

If you haven't had your fill of freaky existentialism for the evening, and happen to have Amazon Prime, check out:

That's another one I cleared out of my watch list last night. Fairly decent, and thematically similar. (Don't believe the "American Doctor Who" rubbish in the description though.)

Bizarre and entirely coincidental anecdote: I got the biggest laugh when the Trinity test footage got going. Years ago I wrote and ran a Call of Cthulhu campaign, which essentially mashed up Twin Peaks and the X-Files. The kick-off story was (wait for it) set around the Trinity site and an inter-dimensional evil that was unleashed at ground zero, taking decades to gestate. So apparently I'm bent a bit like Lynch.

Yea wow, that was some major signature Lynch weird! But, I must say completely fascinating. The creepy ash men (Got a light?...Got a Light?) Just a hint.....don't give this guy jack, just run! Zeiram, I think you've nailed it pretty well as you do briefly see Laura's face in the golden orb the giant sends Earthward. Most of the episode is a visual trip, a filmed nightmare and while it may be infuriatingly obtuse in sections, it's something you can't take your eyes off of. Just remember, the whites of the eyes are horses. Nope, haven't got a clue!

Can't wait for the next one.

Yeah. Same here.

Got about a third of the way through I just kept thinking
"He's just messing with us now"

I get that there is back story, and history here. And I think it will have a bearing on the way things play out. But man is he taking the round-about way to get there.
And being so over-the-top about it, in a way only Lynch can.

I already had a feeling we were in for a head-scratcher. We had a way too coherent story in the last episode. That gave us a lot of what we've been waiting for.
So it stood to reason that it would be followed by something more vague and uncomfortable.
I just didn't think it would go THAT far in that direction.

It was intriguingly surreal though. And somewhat mesmerizing.
Which makes me wonder how many clues we didn't notice because how strange it was.
