I disagree. I think the doctor holds her own as well.
The rest of the cast has potential.

And as flat as some of this has been, it is still no where near as painful as STTNG season 1.

I enjoyed this episode. Appreciated that they dialed back on the jokes and stuck more with snark.
It think that works much better.
Yeah, the plot isn't going to leave you on the edge of your seat. But I don't expect it to, so that isn't a big deal for me.

I would really love to see Wil Wheaton make an appearance on this.

Me too.

Ironically (based on his appearances on TBBT) - he'd be the best actor in the show :)

No word on a Wheaton appearance but it looks like Charlize Theron will be on the next episode.

I like the Scott Grimes character, he seems pretty cool. My biggest beef is with the interior sets of the ship, they seem so cheap and un-ship like.

Episode 3 was even better than the two before it.
Good plot. Decent acting. Less cringe-worthy 'jokes'.
And, surprisingly, they avoided going for the rosy, cheery ending.

This is starting to round into a decent show.

Best of the 3 so far - but STILL too much like ST-TNG with the cheesiness.

There were some damn funny laugh-out-loud lines which were (for me) the sole redeeming feature.

Examples:
  • • Gooey thing to Doctor - "There's more where that came from".
    • Grayson to convened round-table "Hey doc - I'm not feeling well - I've had the ti ts all day."
    • Shuttlepod scene after explosion - Grimes - "I'm gonna need a pair of pants brought to the landing site" /// Grayson - "He's kidding" /// Grimes - "No I'm not"
The synchronised rifle-cocking was god-awful - unless it was supposed to be a tribute to the 3-amigos, but the "dance off" saved that scene (even if it was a GOTG rip-off (homage?))

They are certainly not shy about the alcohol & drugs intake either - not a fan of that.

The continuity editing between angles of the same scene continues to be terrible too.

And the end-character's reveal was totally predictable, as was the ending itself (and what was with that Australian accent!?)

It's like a time-warp back to the 80's instead of 400 years in the future.

I could not agree with this more. It was 98% straight drama and 2% comedy. With a very heavy subject matter and not a happy ending.

This is getting better and better.

Sorry, Ian. I'm with Trevor on this one.

Each to their own bud - I've always assumed you were not a metalhead too - never held that against you either :)

Now - if I find out you're a RAP fan . . . . . well - that'd be you off the Christmas card list!

The Orville

#30 Post by Ellis Kendrick »

Check out the new tongue-in-cheek sci-fi by Seth McFarlane. It's based on the original Star Trek series with Shatner. It's surprisingly good and the FX is excellent.
The Orville is the name of the starship and is certainly worthy of a new resin kit ! In fact, all of their vessels are beautiful designs. And while we're at it, Adrianne Palicki is his first officer - Woo hoo ! Somebody has got to a sculpt of her.
The scripts are funny overall but social issues are treated seriously - last Thursday's was about the rights of newborn children.
Check it out.

I've seen the three episodes that have aired so far, and I have to agree...it's pretty darned good!

It seems obvious that they're still trying to figure out what they want the show to be, but I thought the third episode was better than the second, which was better (though not by much) than the first. It's not Galaxy Quest, but it's not horrible either so I'll keep watching until it stops being entertaining.
The older I get, the better it was.

I figure, by this point it has earned a full season viewing.
It hasn't sucked.
It's been getting better as it goes, even though it has a pretty much rookie crew of actors on it, and a different director for each episode so far.
The whole season is only like 12 or 13 eps, so I plan on watching all of them and see where they end up with it.

I'm actually still trying to get over episode three. It just sort of blew my socks off.

The subject matter was so... private? Intiment? Sex change on a baby? And then it didn't go in the right direction?

I mean, wow.

That was pretty heavy.

So yeah. Orville scored huge points with me for episode three. :-(

I agree completely.

I think it finally hit it's stride this week. Perfect blend of Sci Fi and comedy.

Loved the 'won't get lime disease on our ship' line.
Plausible deniability.

Underneath all the jokes there is some serious issues that he is bringing up. I don't think it work if he did not have the humor.

Actually, I wouldn't even call it humor.
I would call it being real.
These characters are not some perfect examples that are perfectly adjusted or behaved.
They are real. With all the flaws that most people have, including sarcasm, and being a smart ass.
