Next I'm thinking either Dark Star, Little Shop of Horrors or Attack of the Mushroom People.

Attack of the mushroom people may be a bit disturbing and depressing for most kids.

The thing that makes the Mushroom People disturbing and depressing for kids is the starvation angle. With most anything else theres enough pyschological distance that what happens on screen never really gets under their skin, but all kids have an in built and very deep fear of starvation. That makes what happens to the characters more real to them.

Ordinarily anything that resonates with the viewer's mind on a primitive level is a good thing for telling the story but not in this case.

A film experiance that would be good for todays kids is the old TV series "men into space". Plenty of old time heroics and fairly good science.
I'd like to see them create a modern version of that series, set in the near future when the U S space program gets back on its feet and starts going places again.

The recent movie "Gravity" reminds me of some of the more intense episodes of "Men into Space".
