Yeah - after that PROMETHEUS crap it's a case of "fool me once . . . . "

The hype has made it look great (as it did for Prometheus), but I'm going to watch someone elses copy

At least it's not being uniformly panned.

Did that happen with Prometheus? - I thought it had lots of positive reviews from critics? (72% on Rotten Tomatoes)

I liked Prometheus. I certainly liked it a lot more than Aliens 3 and 4.

It's one of those divisive little buggers that's for sure.

A3 (the "directors cut" anyways) is my fave of the 4 - and certainly my fave (movie) alien design.

Like AR too - the characters/interaction are great. For me, it got spoiled when Ripley is dragged through the floor towards the end - I'm not a fan of the queen & newborn scenes. Really like the alien design in AR as well.

Covenant looks like it COULD be much better than Prometheus, but it'll take a LOT of positive feedback from folks whose opinions I value before I would even consider paying out money to go watch it.

I agree that Alien 3 was unfairly maligned. Were there things I disliked about it - sure, but it was incredibly atmospheric and a terrific glimpse of Fincher yet to come.

Having watched it, I can say that it is disappointing. A lot of the themes introduced in Prometheus are ignored. The fist 2 acts are good, but the final act is a rehash oh Alien.
His was a tale of sorrow...

Took my eldest son to see it last night and both felt it was a film of 2 halves; Ridley Scott can certainly direct a film beautifully, but whoever was responsible for the screen play / script / casting needs shooting. I'm going to hint at the plot here (what there was of it), so please don't read on if it will spoil things for you.

The first part was ok, a little corny with the 'oh dear we've been woken up early by a strange signal better go investigate' formula. David developing the pathogen into its various strains and the tension of the 'spine burster' albino variation leaping about wasn't too bad. We felt that David and Walter were the only characters that had any depth, the rest were just their as cannon fodder. Lots of lovely space ships and nasty infections going on but you can't hang a film on cgi.

Then it was as though the writer suddenly decided he had to end the film pretty damn quick, as though he simply ran out of budget or imagination. So they slaughter a few more crew and concoct a really corny, predictable, crazy scrap on a shuttle with a token appearance of the 'big chap'. The girl suddenly went from timid chic to swinging around like Tarzan on a wire. It just felt 'lazy', bland, predictable and a re boot of Ripley's last scene on the Narcissus in Alien. They even tried to fry it in the exhaust port! We finish with such a predictable twist, you could see it coming ten miles away and David reduced to a cartoon villain, "I'll just go and tuck the children in". A big shame, leaving us both feeling a bit gutted.

I still keep going back to the original '79 movie as the ultimate version, both for believable characters, acting, script, special effects and the final creature. Yes it was a man in a suit, but a what a beautifully crafted suit. This gives it a weight, a graceful presence, a reality that is so much more 'real' than any cgi. Carlo Rambaldi's animatronic head, with its roll back lips and saliva, it's real.

There, I've had my rant, sorry if I've gone on a bit! :D

Thanks for the spoiler warning Paul - I read the bits above and skipped the middle - perfect bit of feedback (for me) :thumb2:

I generally agree with the comments. The good thing about this franchise - so far - has been that it at least tried to reinvent itself each time, even if it was not always well received. This one felt like cheque books won out over originality.

Lazy, derivative, miscast. Prometheus had an actress in roughly the same league as Weaver but this one had the equivalent of Molly Ringwald trying to go gonzo. Convincing? Not so much

It was okay until the ending. I thought it was an acceptable entry into the Alien series... Until the ending. That alone has forced me to hate this film.

Thought it was good, not great. I agree with the positive things Geoff mentioned. It was not as engaging or suspenseful as I hoped it would be. But I do love Prometheus.

Went and saw it yesterday.
For anyone that hasn't seen it on the big screen save your loot.
I felt cheated and let down.
The whole Aliens flicks are my fav-0-rite films but this one just blew chunks.

At least we have Prometheus 2 to look forward to ( or do we?)
