Star Trek Discovery

Okay, maybe it was just me being cranky but I kind of found this really dull. Other opinions?

I liked it! Two women of color in charge and center stage. Cerebral and action packed. Some goofy moments but overall I'll pay to see how it goes. Six bucks isn't that bad. And like you've pointed out on other shows the pilot is always rough.

So what's the timeline on this supposed to be?

Apparently, it's supposed to take place before the Kirk and Spock Enterprise. Which would mean it would be on the original time line. Meaning not the J.J. Abrams' time line. Meaning we'd be in the original Star Trek universe.

Did that make any sense at all?

Which is the same opinion so many had of the now, much-revered original, that was cancelled after three seasons.
I preferred ST:D to The Orville.
I honestly don't know what people expect to see in the first hour (or two since I watched both episodes) of a series plotted and paced to last 15 episodes.
Would you walk out of a two-hour movie after the first six minutes? Because that's the equivalent amount of time that's been broadcast so far of this first season.

Hey. I'm not saying to walk out on it or give up on it. I'm just saying I found it kinda dull. I'll keep watching too. And hope that it gets better.

I mean, come on, Encounter at Farpoint basically sucked. But the series ended up being great.

I will disagree with you on one point. I do think The Orville is doing it better.

I watched it, but was unimpressed.
If it was aired on regular network TV I would probably give it about 5 episodes before I decided to jump ship.
But, since it is not on network TV, I will not be watching any more of it.

Liked it, strong female lead. Moral dilemmas. Action, humor. I'm in. :borg:

There is no way this could have been 10 years before the original TOS - say it's a prequel to JJ Trek and it fits in better. I wish it was just a sci-fi show called Discovery with no ties to Star Trek. I could have bought into more that way. I didn't hate it and would have gave it a chance on regular broadcast TV but I don't want to lay out any more $$$ for additional programming sites. Given a choice between Discovery and Orville I choose the latter. I feel more entertained by it and isn't that why we watch a show anyway?
Hopefully if Discovery does well enough and gets a renewal CBS will see fit to offer it on regular broadcast channels.

I love the strong female leads. I just didn't find the story line particularly engaging. :-(

Couldn't get into it at all. The Klingon re imagining just didn't make sense to me, though the light skinned Klingon reminded me of the Villain of a Deep Space Nine episode known as "the Albino'. Possibly where they got the idea.

Only watched a few minutes of it here and there. might have watched the whole ep but the network scheduling resulted in the recording starting about halfway through then cutting off early.

There was more not to like than to like.

Can we go back to the days when Klingons just had cool goatees and
arching eyebrows?!

Little to heavy there nowadays! (Can they turn their heads anymore?!)

Nice effects, great casting, nice makeups but zero chemistry IMO. All sparkle, no substance.

But to be honest, there is no way I'm giving CBS $10 a month, so I was watching with the idea that I won't be seeing the next episodes. Netflix, Hulu or Amazon are one thing, I barely watch broadcast TV but no way am I paying more for less.
Plausible deniability.

I'm sure it'll end up on Amazon soon. They have Salvation, so only
a matter of time.
