Good catch, it was deliberate for the books.

Book 1 was a murder mystery
Book 2 was an adventure story like Indiana Jones with archaeologists finding an alien ship
Book 3 was a revenge/spy story similar to Jason Borne series...or Gemini Man with the younger clone

Season 1 generally followed book 1, a lot of details were changed but it was similar enough. Season 2 was an odd amalgam of books 2 and 3 but mostly book 3 for the overall plot with characters from book 2

Read the books (or listen to audiobooks as you paint). I enjoyed them quite a bit.
