He’s been looking a bit frail for a few years now so I can’t say I’m surprised at the news.

Saddened, but not surprised.

I’ve seen tons more of his movies than those listed below, but THESE are the ones I remember most fondly:
  • • 1972 - Deliverance
    • 1973 - White Lightning
    • 1974 - The Longest Yard (AKA “Mean Machine” in the UK)
    • 1976 - Gator
    • 1981 - The Cannonball Run
Nice job Burt – thanks for the memories - rest in piece.

I remember seeing Gator at the drive-in when I was a child.

Smokey and the Bandit
Cannonball Run

Were 2 of the staples on HBO back in the day when that was the only pay channel.
Remember seeing both many times back then.

One of the funniest stories I ever heard was Burt telling Tom Snyder how the toothless mountain man (“He sure does have a pretty mouth, don’t he!”) was cast in “Deliverance”. Director John Boorman was in a bind because he had already cast a professional actor named Bill McKinney as the “Squeal like a pig” guy but he needed to cast the other role with someone who was missing his front teeth (as that was a plot point), they were already on location, and he couldn’t find a professional actor who met that requirement. When Burt was in college, he worked summers at a Western themed amusement park in Maggie Valley, North Carolina called Ghost Town in the Sky. Burt remembered one of his fellow actors there named Herbert “Cowboy” Coward who was missing his front teeth and who was already sort of a mountain man anyway. Boorman was desperate and told Burt to call him and offer him the part. Burt made the call, told Coward he would be making $1,000 dollars a week, could bring his whole family down all expenses paid, etc, etc. Coward was enthusiastic but Burt felt like he had to be honest about what the part entailed, “There’s just one thing Herbert. If you take the part, you have to ... well, ... you have to rape a man!” Burt said there was a long pause on the phone, and then Herbert replied, “Hell! I done worse than that before! When do I start!?”
