Also - had NO idea (thanks Wikipedia cross-references ) that he wrote the "Sandkings" novelette that was adapted into the 1st 2 episodes of the 1990's "Outer Limits" TV series. Wow - mind blown
I liked it a lot. Seemed even better watching it a second time. Excellent cast, much potential for the characters.
Very nice to see a space exploration show that does not go from one star to the other in the span of a commercial break. Let us not gloss over interplanetary travel too quickly.
I am struggling through episode 4 of this eagerly anticipated series written by George Martin (Game of Thrones). So far, for me anyway, it's a dud with slow-moving plot and long stretches of long-winded speeches and dialog. The story quickly evolved into the standard over-used "something unknown is on the ship and is killing everyone" theme. The characters aren't engaging or even likable.
PLEASE - someone out there tell me that this gets better !
The biggest problem is the original story is a novella and could easily be covered in 4-5 episodes but they wanted to make it 10.
I read the novella and so far (I'm on episode 4) the story is the same but nearly every detail is different. The entire "the L1 is a psychopath and trying to kill us" storyline is an add on (Thale is mistrusted for being a telepath but is not the go to guy to blame everytime someone farts). the Nightflyer has no crew, it's just the captain and some robots, plus his passengers...so the story only has 6 characters. No cast of dozens/hundreds moving through the background, no threats of mutiny because security is so inept they can't keep people out of a cargo bay.
Some of the changes are definitely improvements. The ship is much more interesting than in the book. I don't remember the exact description but it was something like "2 spherical cargo modules located at one end on either side of a long cylidrical drive shaft." Yes, the Nightflyer was a #$#$#$# and balls; that's GRR Martin for you. The eugenics experiment woman is faaaaaar more annoying in the book. Nearly every conversation includes her stating she's the superior model of humanity.
I can't guarentee it gets better. GRRM described it as "a haunted house in space" and it does match that simple description. As of episode 4 they've at least started moving along to the original plot.

People Say Nothing Is Impossible, But I Do Nothing Every Day
-Theodor Rosyfelt
These 2 were a bit more "spooky & weird" than sci-fi. E06 especially - THAT had a "LEXX" feel to it - but more creepy. Seemed a bit out of place and unneeded.
Very interesting characterisation, well acted, and I can't fault any of the production values or effects.
I'm just not sure about the plot I.E. where we're going or why it's taking so long to get there (something else it has in common with "LEXX").
Helena is here at hand;
And the youth, mistook by me,
Pleading for a lover's fee.
Shall we their fond pageant see?
Lord, what fools these mortals be! -Puck
This series lost me in all the philosophizing and preaching. Too many long dry spells of dialogue and plot web-weaving ! Not saying it was bad show - just not my thing !
