First Man

#1 Post by Buc Wheat »

watched it last night. Not sure how to put it into words...

the characters were... so...unemotional?! I just didn't
care what happened to ol' Neal!

and the camera angles were all stuck in the cockpits. Like
could we get ONE outside shot to see what was happening?!

especially during the 1st docking sequence... and maybe tell
us, oh I don't know, what had caused it, after all was said and
done!?

Really didn't like how Buzz was portrayed! For a kid growing up
during this time frame, these guys were our heroes! True live heroes!
and gotta love a man that punches people in the face, in his, what? 80's??!!
when they dont believe he went to the moon, will FOREVER be OK in my book.

Overall...watch 'The Right Stuff' and 'Apollo 13' instead and skip this one.

IMHO

I've heard more than one bad review of this film. Apparently the director actually wanted to downplay the fact that this mission was an American triumph at all. He even intended to leave out the planting of the American flag all together. Someone apparently talked some sense into him at the last moment.

no flag planting...but did see it in the background. Heard the hubbub
but thought it was alot of fake ruffled feathers. Everyone has to be
bothered by something, nowadays!

Actually the part when he's on the ladder was pretty interesting to
me... didn't realize that one of the worries was how deep the lander
would sink into the ground...or if the ladder ended to high above the
ground that it would pose a problem getting back into the lander. Valid
worries...but until this film I never heard it mentioned. Actually liked that.

That was the purpose of the probe on the landing pad. If it didn't hit solid ground and deform, they could abort the landing.

Saw it in the theater in IMAX and quite enjoyed it. Definitely gives you the feeling of the claustrophobia of the early space capsules and the stress and disorientation of sub-space and space flight. The effects in this movie are so realistic and harrowing that there is not a shot that doesn't look and feel 100% real. Also reminds of us that these guys were fully human, not "bigger than life" - with wives and children and personal problems and occasional pettiness - we get to know them and when they die for the cause (as so many did) we feel that loss. Gosling is excellent as always - as a man both haunted and driven by the death of his daughter at a very young age. I found it to be a very moving film AND the most realistic cinematic portrayal of space travel we have yet seen. I love "The Right Stuff" and "Apollo 13". "First Man" is just a bit more down to earth, so to speak. I highly recommend it.
