After Life - Netflix

#1 Post by Buc Wheat »

Once again in my 'nothing on watchlist' and saw this pop up on
newly added.

If you like Ricky Gervais (as well as cast members from 'extras' and
'shane of the dead') I know you'll get a kick out of this series.

Only 1 season... 6 eps... binge watched it all last night cuz it was
so good.

Check it out, shippies.

Watched it last weekend.

Bit of a sensitive subject so I wasn't sure about this at first.

It'll make you LYAO and cry - often in the same scene.

Showed that Ricky has some REAL acting chops.

Everything about it is extremely well done.

Just finished binging The Expanse*, so I'll look at this next.

* If you haven't watched Expanse, you should. Really great SF series. The belter-speak is a little jarring at first, but you get used to it.
The things you own end up owning you. It's only after you lose everything that you're free to do anything.

Renewed for season 2 - https://www.comingsoon.net/tv/news/1055 ... d-season-2

Commenting on the renewal announcement, Ricky said . . .

    • “I have never had a reaction like this before.
        • It’s been insane.
            • And heartwarming.
                • But now I have to make sure the second season is even better so I’ll probably have to work much harder than usual.
                    • Annoying really.”

Yeah - saw a really funny trailer with him & his mate (as local newspaper reporters) interviewing a girl who'd had bad cosmetic surgery - the man cracks me up - the straight-faced deadpan responses - OMG!

All episodes available Fri 24th April - less than a week to go :hot:

As posted for the first season . . .

Found this season a little sadder than the first, heart-wrenching in places due to what the last year brought my family (and others I know).

So VERY glad I binge-watched it yesterday though.

Ricky is a genius that (if he isn't already) will join the ranks of comedy history as one of the all-time greats.

Thank-you Mr. Gervais - for everything you do

Watched the first episode of Season Two tonight and was pleased the show has lost no steam at all.
Looking forward the remaining episodes.

The opening of episode 1 was my favourite piece of the whole season  the fast re-introduction to all the main characters while The Carpenters "Top Of The World" played, followed by the hysterical interview of Annette Crosbie (the lass from "One Foot In The Grave" ironically) :)

Jen and I watched the whole 2nd season straight through as we had to see what happened. Ricky Gervais made it alternatively as funny as hell and so sad it was almost unbearable. Genius writing on this with a cast that is right on the mark. It seems that those who understand comedy best also have a deep understanding of tragedy too. An excellent 2nd season that grasps that working thru grief is not linear.

Renewed for season 3 - https://www.comingsoon.net/tv/news/1133 ... on-netflix

More tears & laughs on the way . . .

    • “I was planning to retire soon and just wander around the house drunk until I die,
        • but I’ve grown a bit tired of doing that during the lockdown,
            • and also Netflix made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.”

Official outtakes from season 2 - some funny - some annoying as heck.

It goes without saying (but I'll say it anyways) . . . don’t watch unless you’ve seen the actual episodes.

I came to 2 conclusions:
  • 1) I REALLY hate that counsellor/psychiatrist (hated him in the series, hate him in the outtakes – basically – hate him).
    2) Working with Gervais must be a real interesting & unpredictable combination of riotous fun and frustration.

The UK's annual National TV awards ceremony was last night - "After Life" won in it's category . . .

    • Netflix's best comedy win for After Life marked the only award of the night to be won by a streaming service.

"Thank you to Netflix for their support and total lack of interference," said creator, writer and star Ricky Gervais. "Thanks to the people at home who voted for it, thank you so much. You're the reason I do this, [after] the money."

Speaking in the winners' room about the positive reception to the show, he told the Press Association: "I'm still surprised by it. It's a show about a man who wants to kill himself and his wife dies of cancer, and people go 'OK, this sounds funny'.

"And the reaction has been incredible, people come up to me on the streets and they go 'I lost my brother or I lost my mother', and you realise that everyone's grieving. However dark something is they want to see themselves on the screen, and it opens the conversation."

He revealed the forthcoming third season could potentially be released before Christmas, but the one spoiler he would reveal was that the dog does not die (thank goodness - Brandy is our favourite character in the show).

There were only 3 categories I was interested in, so I would have preferred that Graham Norton & Piers Morgan won in theirs too - but you can't have everything :)

So pleased for Ricky & and everyone involved in the creation of the show (and Netflix).
