I confess that the critical reaction to this one has cooled my jets a bit, meaning I might wait for it to play at the dollar theater. I'll see it one way or another, though, and I know that critics are rarely enthusiastic about Godzilla films.

I also take this as further proof that Rotten Tomatoes is tremendously influential, because I was all fired up for King of the Monsters two weeks ago. Same was true of Glass, which I still haven't seen (and probably won't at all, having read the spoilers).

Taking off my Godzilla fanboy glasses for a moment.

For regular movie going audiences, I would say this film falls between Godzilla, and Skull Island.
Skull Island is a good character driven movie set with Kong and giant monsters.
I forgot how much that movie relied on the cast until I happened to catch it on TV last night.

King of the Monsters doesn't have that much acting in it.
But it is miles ahead of the 2014 movie. That had little compelling character stuff after the first bit with Bryan Cranston.
For comparison, I would say the plot and acting would be about equal to Pacific Rim (the first one). With much easier to see, and follow fight scenes.
While a lot of the monster stuff in King of the Monsters is at night, or in the rain, it doesn't feel like it was done to hide anything. It is completely natural and feels more plot driven. Unlike the first movie which really felt like they were trying to cover up some CGI sins.
The fights themselves are smooth and natural. Very easy to follow. Just like the ones in Skull Island.

Now, back to fanboy mode.
Seriously, if you are any kind of fan of the genre, you need to go see this movie in the theater.
It must be experienced on the big screen with the big sound.

Going to see it this weekend and looking forward to it immensely. Don't care what critics say, their tastes often run counter to mine, and I know that a Godzilla film is never going to be Shakespeare level of drama, I just plan to enjoy the monsters

And enjoy the monsters you will! Just got back from the cinema, epic is the word, awesome creatures, Gidhora and Godzilla are just fantastic, Mothra and Rodan equally so.
Go see! :D

For those who base their decision on weather to see a movie
based on "critical reaction" or "tanking at the box office", and
not the enthusiasm of fans of the specific genre, you deserve
to miss seeing it on the big screen.
And to say "As if it is necessary... anymore.." in reference to
the upcoming 3rd Godzilla movie, you are probably not a fan.
So, HOW MANY Fast and Furious movies were there???
Don't like it enough to trust the true fans? Don't see it.

AND for the record... I have seen it twice already!!!
So I obviously loved it, and might see it one more time
because it's one of those movies that needs to be seen
on the big screen with the big sound.

I only look at Rancid Tomatoes for a bit of a giggle these days - or to look at box office figures out of curiosity (box office figures are not collated by them so I trust them more).

Their collected "professional critic" reviews just CANNOT be taken seriously. Total bollocks that is often biased by whatever is the "social cause of the moment", driven by agenda or what is deemed as trendy for social media purposes.

Their non-pro "I've seen it" reviews are (if read discerningly) a much better reflection.

Assuming I have ANY interest in a movie in the first place, I tend to go by trailers (unless I'm avoiding them due to possible spoilers), and then look at the reviews on "Coming Soon", and (of course) HERE.

BTW - I enjoyed "Glass", and will likely watch the trilogy again at some point.

Critics as a group are loved and hated almost as much as the most prominent political figures these days, it seems. I generally find Rotten Tomatoes reliable but it's not unheard of for me to like something the people aggregated there hated. Age of Apocalypse is one example because I'm the guy who actually enjoyed that one when he checked it out from the library to watch with his kid.

As for Glass ... I loved Unbreakable. LOVED it and have seen it at least 10 times. But I finished Split feeling like there wasn't much point to it other than watching James McAvoy have tons of fun. The critics' response to Glass led to to me checking out the spoilers (which I won't share here) and deciding against seeing the film for fear that I wouldn't be able to put it out of my mind next time I break out my Unbreakable DVD. So on that one I appreciate the small service Rotten Tomatoes did for me.

And now to get back on topic, it's still true that King of the Monsters is probably review-proof for me and I'll see it, most likely in the theater.

By the way, did y'all know that the Rotten Tomatoes score for Shin Godzilla is very good, 86 percent positive? That movie bored me to death.

Finally got to see it this morning - loved it! Superb monster design. Was not looking for Schindlers List plot-wise, I was looking for giant monsters bashing the living kaiju out of each other :) Don't think I've ever wanted to whoop in a cinema so much before! (and we don't do that in the UK :))

Really want a clear-G for lighting!

Agreed 100% Ant, and my other half endured / enjoyed it too! It does what it says on the lid, 'state of the art, Kaiju punch up!'

Saw the film yesterday for Father's Day - The little geek boy in me LOVED IT - the way I loved the old Man-In-Suit movies. The grown up Crazy Joe rolled his eyes at the nonsensical plot, but still dug the hell out of the monsters and the realistic way they were portrayed. And I'd watch Charles Dance in a commercial for hemorrhoid ointment and be enthralled.

The things I no longer believe in Star Trek now plague me when I view giant monster movies. The science has to make SOME kind of sense in the physical law scale, or else that story had better be fantasy, where the rules of science don't apply. I could just as soon be watching "Game of Thrones" or "Lord of the Rings" or even "Star Wars". There is NO FXXXING way a 350 foot-tall vertebrate reptilian is sustainable in any kind of ecology, prehistoric or otherwise, much less a cadre of 17, WHICH INCLUDES A GIANT MEMBER OF LIPIDOPTERA??? Which REALLY IS a biological IMPOSSIBILITY.

And Jurassic Park/World turns me off now in a similar way.

But again, the Little Boy Joey in me loves this s**t, so, I'll keep tuning in on occasion.

Saw it also and loved it. I watch these to get "away" from science so if it doesn't make sense, all the better for me. Lots of action and they destroyed Boston and half the East coast. For fun, I picked up a T Facto Godzilla plus the bust that was on sale at Blackheart. Ready to geek out on some resin

Our dollar theater is no longer a dollar theater and King of the Monsters was down to one late-night showing a day when I discovered that. So we saw it a few days ago on Blu-Ray. One of the best Godzilla films ever. Flawed, yes, but they all are. We enjoyed it. Mostly felt we would have preferred a lot more of Mothra, clearly visible.

I saw two different Godzilla movies on sale at WalMart and have a question. Godzilla and Godzilla King Of The Monsters. Both had a picture of what seemed to be the same Godzilla. But I saw part of another Godzilla movie which was animated but Godzilla looked like the one shown on these packages. So are there 2 live action Godzilla movies and one animated, or just one live action and one animated? And which is which?

I want to see the live action movie(s) but want to know which is which. Thanks!

Godzilla is the live action film from Legendary Pictures that came out in 2014
Godzilla King of the Monsters is the 2nd film from Legendary that came out this year.

The animated one is the Godzilla anime.
Basically 3 movies
Part 1: Planet of the Monsters (Monster Planet) (as far as I know, the only one on home media)
Part 2: City on the Edge of Battle
Part 3: The Planet Eater

Not really worth the time to watch the anime. It doesn't satisfy on a Godzilla level, or an anime level (the anime is CGI). It's an ok sci-fi series, with many issues with plot, writing, character developement, and action.
