Ad Astra

Saw it Saturday and walked away with mixed impressions. A little bit "2001", a little bit "Heart of Darkness". Great SPX of course, and several good, tense, action sequences. Pitt and Jones are fine, but some of the situations are implausible (how Pitt gets from point A to B to C), and the "philosophical" payoff comes off as trite, IMHO. Glad to have seen it in the theater - unlikely to watch it again.

I had feeling about this maybe a rental when I'm really bored.

I saw a couple previews which didn't give away anything regarding plot, and was excited about what I saw...chose to go into it blind (so to speak).
Walked out the same; mixed feeling.
That being said, I'm still thinking about it 5 days later, so that tells me (personally) that it was good.
You're right, I found a lot of things very similar to 2001.

Saw it last night and pretty much agree. The voice overs by Pitt kept
reminding me of Apocalypse Now's narrations. Thought the movie dragged
at points and agree the payoff was 'meh'.

Nice shots and camera work.

I read basically the entire plot and descriptions of the major scenes in some online review. Sounds okay but after all the spoilers I ran across I figure I'll wait till it hits cable, which shouldn't be that long.
Sounds promising since it seems to go beyond the average one trick pony type of film with limited number of characters that have become common in the last few years.
I always enjoyed such films in the past but a break is welcome.

I'd really like to see some E E Doc Smith type space operas with casts of thousands and characters that rival Stephen King in depth of development, only much less wordy than King and not so much minutia.
Aliens enemies like the Fenechrone and of course those hot nekkid alien allies from Skylark of Space.
