The Mandalorian

#1 Post by Buc Wheat »

Luckily for me, the youngest son subscribed and made me an album to use.

So why aren't ALL the episodes up at once?! (is it me or releasing them
once a week stupid!!?)

Anyways...really enjoyed ep1 and I guess will hope enuff folks pressure
them to be more like Netflix... although the mouse usually doesn't listen
too well, does he? :)

I'll apparently be watching this Friday night (along with quite a few others).

We've been looking forward to this since we heard about who was cast.

It is to keep people from signing up, watching all the episodes at once, then canceling the service.

Surely you could do that once the last episode was out? (assuming cost was the driving force [no pun intended]).

OK . . . made the excuse of using a "drive by" to stop off tonight instead of (as well as) Friday.

Average disappointment.

Between the giant tadpoles and the awful direction and editing - a real letdown.

The franchise that wowed us in 1977 / 1980 / 1983 created a solid foundation, but bugger-all has been able to match those 3 since then (I'll give VERY honourable mention to "Rogue One" & "Solo" though).

Basically - the first 30 minutes was really badly done. Great effects and ideas let down by incredibly poor execution and a sense of disbelief. Between his "live" action "Lion King" and this - it seems Favreau is so far off his game he's dialing it in from the pub after 6 pints.

The last 10 minutes was GREAT (from the entry of the bounty droid) - a lot more like the energy, enthusiasm and excitement that we got from the original trilogy. And the last minute - WOW!

Overall though - so far - not enough to make it worth a subscription.

Let's see what Friday's E02 brings (I'm hoping Gina Carano saves the day).

Watched it at a buddies house last night and I loved it. To me it had the style and feel of the original trilogy and the cgi didn't have that obvious cgi (crap) look and movement of every movie that followed.
I'm surprised Lucas didn't sign a contract that forbade anyone from mentioning the holiday special.
I am super stoked about this. Haven't been this excited about SW in a very long time.

I enjoyed it.
It's a 30ish minute long intro to the series so you can't expect to be wowed by everything on screen. This is the episode that sets the stage.
I thought it had very high production values and a good touch of SW humour.
For me it felt extremely well integrated into the original trilogy and I was happy to see Jon Favreau's name in the credits. He's an excellent director/producer and I have high hopes for the series.

True, but you wil have to keep the service for the length of the episodes run (I don't know how many episodes there are). Even if you join after all the episodes have been run, you can still only watch one episode a week.

Why can you only watch one per week David? (I'm probably missing something obvious).

Surely if you joined when the last episode (E08) airs (Sun 27th Dec), you could watch all 8 at your leisure - in 1 day if you wanted to binge-watch? Image

S01E02 - "The Child"

To quote my Son - that was much MUCH MUCH better

Shame it was less than half-hour long (once you cut out the credits).

Direction (a different director - yay!) and editing were perfect, as was the story and the pacing. THIS fitted right in with the main universe - BEAUTIFULLY done - the best "mesh" job since Rogue One.

If the rest of them are in this vein and this level of quality then I'll be happy that the franchise has been dredged from the gutters, and there is indeed "A New Hope" (these puns have got to end . . . )

Just watched the second episode and really am liking the series so far, especially how the Mandalorian has a bit of humor to him and isn't the (completely) silent stereotype that I originally expected.

I can't say for sure, I just repeating what I read on the Replica Props Forum, where they were discussing bing watching. It doesn't make sense to me. My Sister gave me a subscription, and Saturday I watched the first episode. The second episode started immediately after the second. This makes me unsure if you can't watch them all at one time after the run, or even the shown episode during the run.

I will say that, that is one very dangerous barroom door.

S01E03 - "The Sin"

Another very enjoyable episode, with a few annoying/stupid (YMMV) bits:
  • • Too long being spent in the covert/armoury again (boooorr-ring).
    • The music in the "airborne entry" scene - just shows how important a CONSISTENTLY decent music score is. The score at that point took us completely out of what should have been a very uplifting scene. The rest of the score has been great.
    • The salute at the end - really? - this ain't the frikkin' Avengers!
All that money spent on amazing costumes, set design and effects, let down by a few minutes of dodgy plot & sloppy music.

There were a couple of things that made me think of my fave movie franchise - the Carl Weathers connection is obvious, but there was also (for me) a definite "Blaine" vibe about that big Mandalorian's weapon :)

I can definitely see similarities to the Man with No Name trilogy in the Mandalorian. I read the star was asked to watch the trilogy and that they wanted his character to be similar to Eastwood's. I also thought it was interesting that, even though Eastwood's character is known as the man with no name, his name is said to be Manco in "For a Few Dollars More", and they were calling the Mandalorian "Mando" in the 3rd episode.
