The first episode of the new direction for the series. Gone are the characters and period from the previous incarnation following the story of Vanessa Ives (Eva Green). John Logan wrote brilliant variations on the classic horror characters of literature and film, that Universal would have done well to take note of, rather than the crap they tried to pander with their Dark Universe failed attempts.
This series starts with clearly what is going to be the theme and ongoing conflict for City of Angels between spirits/demons Magda (Natalie Dormer) and her sister Santa Muerte (lorenza Izzo). Magda is set her sights on the downfall of mankind for her own amusement influencing human actions in subtle and MUCH less than subtle means. Years later, enter a young man who is the 1st Mexican American homicide detective on the LAPD in 1938. Detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) and his older, wiser partner Lew Michener (Nathan Lane) are immediately given a ritual murder case that will clearly tie to the forces that Magda is marshaling. This is well done and glad it is John Logan penning this! Not to mention Rory Kinnear is back as a German immigrant doctor, being influenced by guess who?
Can't wait for the next one-

It's on Showtime as the original series was. Showtime is also doing a 30 day free trial if you want to check it out without committing to another 10+ dollars to your monthly bill.

Re: Penny Dreadful: City of Angels
I watched the first episode. Naaaaw.
I liked the familiar characters from the 1st series and that storyline
but this one doesn't seem as appealing.
