As good as the original with Charleton Heston?

I tend to favor war movies dealing with ground combat, but I enjoyed Midway more than I thought I would, and would recommend it to anyone that likes war movies. The aerial battle scenes are good, and for a two hour plus movie, the pacing was great. It never felt like they were dragging scenes out too far. That being said, I would have liked a little more character development. When some of the secondary characters were KIA, I didn't feel the emotional hit that much because I didn't feel like I knew them that well. Anyway, that's my two cents worth...

This version relies alot more in the intel aspect of the story, based on the book
this script relied on.

As for the, <cough> John Wayne version... haven't seen it for awhile and I'll revisit
it next Memorial Day when TNT plays um all!

John Wayne wasn't in Midway. You're probably thinking of "In Harms Way". Charleton Heston and Henry Fonda were in the original Midway.

Having watched action clips from the movie I have mixed feelings about this one.
The CGI is very well done, but not that much better than the battle scenes of the reenactments of Enterprise battles on the Quest channel that I've seen in recent years, those are of course more than just a cut above what you might expect from a TV history program.

The details of the Midway battle are too well known for there to be any real surprises.

BTW
If I'm not mistaken the battle in the film "In Harm's Way" is fictional, not historical.

I'd like to see a feature film done about the heroic battle of the Taffy 3 task force at Samar.
A real David vs Goliath battle of a very small force of destroyers and Destroyer Escorts pitted against a massive fleet of Japanese Battleships and Cruisers, any one of which had more fire power than the entire Taffy 3 task group.
By refusing to flee and pressing home their attacks Taffy 3 convinced the Japanese that a much larger force was on the way and broke off the battle and retreated after taking terrific damage and losing several Heavy Cruisers.
Had Taffy 3 not sacrificed themselves the Japanese would have slaughtered US forces on the beaches in the Philipines.

That would make a terrific film and I was not familiar with that battle.

I enjoyed Midway and it was a well paced entertaining telling. I do notice in some scenes that the CGI can take you out of the reality of the moment, and it happens with other movies too. I guess it's just an inversion of models looking less than real in older war films. I love 633 Squadron, but in some scenes the De Havilland Mosquitos look really wonky.

As far as a movie about sea battles, I'm really looking forward to Greyhound. The previews look stellar.

I enjoyed it, really kept the pace going. One or two scenes seemed like an embellishment for the sake of entertainment but it was way better than I was expecting.
