I'm a little confused - where will the old threads go from the "eliminated" forums? Hopefully NOT deleted! I would support merging forums such as Tar Pit (my main forum in the old days) with "Stomping Grounds" and maybe add "Harryhausen" to the title.

I am moving this Fall, and anticipate having LOTS more time to model those closet-fulls of dinosaurs/Harryhausen/fantasy/Kaiju kits and bashes I've been saving up for the past 6 years once we get settled in South Texas - I'm gonna NEED those forums!!! (Or one big combined forum for those subjects).

Seriously, Trev - so long as the old threads are not lost, do what you think is best. We'll find places to post our stuff ... :jam:

Yeah.
No threads are going to be deleted. We don't want to lose any of that information.
All the old threads would be moved.
All the completed kit threads would get moved to the Museum.
Build threads would be moved to the Workbench.

That's weird that you say that, as I just tried looking for a thread I had bumped in the past few weeks and it is nowhere to be found. Search doesn't come up with it either.

Was it in the 'Help' forum?
That is the only place I pruned posts. Most of what was there was old, outdated, and not really worth keeping. And even then, I still kept like the last 8 years worth of posts before I moved it.

What was the thread you were looking for?

What's even odder is it was back this morning. It had been the post by Anthony/ Kangolkid, about his Takayanagi Dragon King. Nothing could be found by searching for the thread or the poster last night.

Hoping to hear any good news or any news on that piece. Especially nowadays considering the way of the world.

What is funny is I had also noticed a few other posts had come back as well. Nothing I can say as specifically as Anthony's but some I had actually posted in. When I went to sleep last night there were 3 on the first page now more. I didn't go on a posting spree either.

A little more shuffling around completed.
Just combined the Dinosaur and Kaiju forums into one. Neither has been super active, and they both use the same skills and techniques. Especially making bases.
So I figured they would be a natural pairing.

Again, I am thinking about adding yet another forum. But I want to get some feedback first.
Anyone else think that a 3-D printing forum would be useful?
I figure these things are going to keep getting cheaper, so more people are going to be getting them.

A 3D printing forum? Hmmmm...

I like the idea in principle, although I don't know for sure that it's a good idea to create a new forum separating kits that are essentially the same subject matter, but made differently.

I DO think some education about 3D printed pieces would be valuable. Information is difficult to get and there's a fair amount of resistance.

Did I mention that my third printer arrived an hour ago? I'm printing most parts of an upcoming release.

I have to agree with Todd.

Just leave things the way that they are. Those seeking more info about working with printed kits could post in the Workbench or Garage.

I think you mis-understand.

I am talking about a forum to discuss the process of 3D printing.
Different printers, different media used by the printers. Software. Set up. Maintenance.

Things like that.

I am thinking we are going to have more and more members trying this stuff at home. And that they might want a set area to discuss the process with others they know, who have done it already.

That or just kind of morph the sculptors forum into an area to discuss all aspects of kit creation.
Sculpting, printing, molding, and casting.

Ah, ok. That would work.

Yeah, I read it wrong at first myself! :) All I could envision is it turning
into a bunch of "Oh, don't get that file from there, he ripped off so & so!!"

I see alot of that over on the FB 3D groups and there are alot of discussions of
recasters or passing files unauthorized and I'd hate to see that can of worms
going on for pages after pages of threads here!

Oh gawd no. I don't want to get dragged into any of that.
Way too hard to keep track of what came from where and where it originated, etc.

No I'd like to keep it more of how-to.
Nuts and bolts kind of stuff.
And recommendations on hardware and settings or set up.

I do still like the idea, but upon reflection I wonder if it's going to draw many participants. There are more 3D-oriented groups on Facebook than I could count and interested people are probably already active in those.

That's why I brought the idea up.
I too thought it would be a good idea, but I also have no idea if anyone would actually use it.

Then again, I didn't think it would draw more people, just thought that some of the members already here would probably be getting in on the action.
And it would be nice for them to know where to look for discussion on the subject.

The more I think of it though, a dedicated forum would probably be overkill.
But still considering a little retitling of the sculptors forum. It's been kinda dead in there.
Threads on the first page go back over a year right now.

That's where this is all heading. As we move forward more and more of the producers are selling prints rather than castings.

Makes sense so that if the person prints a bad copy it is on them. Picky collectors have been making casting more and more difficult for years now.

When they first started out they were brittle, fragile and tricky; but, now things are much better.

There are still some that print and clean up their master, and cast from that too.

But yeah, there are a lot that are just selling prints, or selling files.

Personally, I still prefer a resin casting. Prints are ok, and the prices are generally lower.
But they don't feel right, without the weight of resin.

I know quite well the process of how they turn the print into the master.

But, with the costs having come down considerably I have conversely discovered that it is far cheaper for them to simply sell the prints directly instead of paying hundreds for molds to be made; since they now own the printer and do it themselves instead of farming that out as well.

An unneeded and extraneous expense at that point.

Imagine my surprise recently when a producer I have been doing molding and casting for years for said he had 3 new pieces for me to mold up. Only one showed up. By following his facebook postings I can clearly see he is simply selling the prints for the others he was going to send. I can't blame him in the slightest.

i just foresee a time when most kits will be online for printing. Even if they hadn't been sculpted on a computer as evidenced by Mark Newman's Moonsinger kit.
