LOLs to Trev - Steve has always been a "smiley face" :) - Roxanne still sits at the top of his movie list for the Campbell Clan.

Back to songs - been weighing my continued annoyance with KI$$ using the Ace & Peter makeup with (admittedly talented) replacements AGAINST the fact that both of the originals were f***ed-up addicts.

Dee Sniders latest forey (this week) into the interweb machine speaks of the same thing (not very well since he called Sean Connery "Welsh" at one point).

Conclusions:
  • • It's SO wrong to use the original makeup & portray others as originals.
    • I admire Gene as a businessman & performer.
    • I admire Paul as a singer, for what he shares in his book, for awesome performances with KISS AND for BOTH his solo albums.
    • I admire Ace for his raw talent (hence the entry here).
By FAR the best track on Ace's 1978 solo album (and the only track from there that deserves repeated play nowadays) - Fractured Mirror.

Agree, it is a great track. (and the best on the album)
Disagree it is the only one still worth listening to.
New York Groove is still one that gets me wound up.

Also 'Rip it Out' and 'Speedin' Back to My Baby' are easy on the ears.
'Ozone' is an interesting tune, but the lyrics suck.

I can still play the whole album without cringing too much, or wanting to FF too often.
Though that may be colored by the fact that I played the crap out of this thing when it first came out. I discovered KISS during the Double Platinum time frame. So the solo albums were the first 'new music' I heard from them. And other than a couple selected songs from the other 3 entries, this was the only one worth listening to. So even the bad songs still carry some nostalgia for me.

Ditto.

Probably got into them mid-1978, so just missed the releases of Love Gun (June 30th 1977), and Alive II (Oct 14th 1977).

Discovered Double Platinum (released April 2nd 1978) and promptly bought everything from their back-catalogue I could find - mostly the coloured vinyl versions.

The solo albums were the first things I bought as they were released.

These things are always down to personal preference, but to this day I think Stanley's album soars way WAY above the others. I prefer his writing and singing, and aside from "Fractured Mirror" could easily never listen to anything off ANY of the other solo albums ever again (I did a FF through all of Ace's before my original post just to remind myself). To me, the other 3 solo albums sound child-like & simplistic - composed of "filler" material when compared to the grade "A" songs on Stanley's.

But heck - life would be boring if everyone agreed on everything :)

Sounds similar, though I filled out most of the back catalog on 8-track
Mostly from Columbia House too :)

I might have to revisit the solo albums again. Ace's was the only one I ever actually 'owned'.
The others were cassette recordings from friends vinyl. I didn't hear enough to interest me in spending the cash to own them.

The only ones I had on vinyl were Destroyer, Ace's solo, Dynasty, Unmasked, and Creatures of the Night (original cover). The rest were all 8-track.

Would have been early 79 when I discovered them. Someone was playing Double Platinum on a long bus ride (6th grade field trip to Niagara Falls).

alive 2 was the 1st LP i ever bought...cool gateway pic when you opened it up...

speaking of personal preference, i always though ace did what needed to be done for a band like kiss but would give him 5-6 out of 10 as a guitarist...top 100? definitely...

suxxx they use the same makeup now...

I got on board with KISS early on - with the original Alive album, so was easy to get the first 3 vinyl's - got every album released on the day they came out after that including all 4 Solo's ( got the bag they put them in at the time). Still got the cd's as they were released on the day as well. I don't care for the make-up on Tommy & Eric, would rather they just drop the makeup again. But in their defense - if they didn't do it someone else would so I can see going with it - not a bad gig to have. I worked with them on several shows during the Psycho Circus and Farewell Tours and they are all nice guys in private. Peter was a little whiny though. Met Eric and Bruce after they were out of Kiss, Eric thru Alice Cooper and Bruce thru Grand Funk Railroad. We did catering of bands then.
Back to the Solo albums - I think Paul's was technically the most polished but I preferred most of the songs on Ace's - his were easier to rock out to. Gene and peter should have pitched their albums before they were ever released, both bad in my opinion.
I guess you figured I'm a big KISS fan but the first time I saw them in concert was during the Destroyer Tour - I actually went to the show with the sole purpose of seeing Bob Seger!!

Yup - blew me away the first time I saw it.

With the interweb machine the way it is, kids will never know the excitement of waiting for an album to arrive in the stores, holding it in their hands, and being amazed when they open it up.

And Steve - interesting stuff! Image

I was lucky enough to be around for (almost) all of JP's history.

This was sent by a friend and it reminded me of just how awesome these guys used to be.

That's about where I left off as well. :(

Sadly, I didn't 'discover' them until British Steel, but after that, I ate up their back catalog.
Matter of fact just listened to Stained Class, and Sad Wings earlier this week.

While I did buy Turbo when it came out, it just didn't have the staying power of their other releases. I kinda liked a few songs on the album, but they didn't really stick in my head, and I didn't 'have' to listen to them.
The next one Ram It Down suffered the same fate. Though I never actually bought that one, just listened to it a few times at a friend's house.

Had no clue Disturbed had new music in the pipeline.
This thing rocks.
And the video is icing on the cake.
