don't like priest without rob ….

listening to Priest without Halford is like listening to Maiden with out Bruce just doesnt work ….

…. JP without Rob was just fine live, playing the classics. But I can't think of anything memorable they did without Rob either.

I have to say,Judas Priest released the Painkiller album in 1990,and it sounded alot like the first Fight album that Rob released in 1992 after he left Judas Priest.Painkiller was one of their best albums, and with the Fight album being so similar, how could anyone not like Fight, unless it wasnt given a good listening to?
OK – I’ll keep using the “personal taste” phrase – were never going to agree on everything – not even US :D

I’ve tried to be brutally honest with my thumbs up / thumbs down on their studio albums – all 16 of which I have listed below. The album gets a thumbs up (green) if I felt there were at least 4 AWESOME tracks on the album – and I think most of those so coloured are 90%+ perfection.

Again – it will be down to personal taste, so I know some of you will disagree. In fact, given that Anthony & Trev seem to appreciate the “speed/thrash” aspects of the whole genre more than myself, I would not be surprised if you both liked the 1988/1990 albums more than I. Anthony has already said that he feels Painkiller is one of their best albums – I thought it was a complete waste of time and money. I tried playing it again this-morning – does nothing for me (sorry! )

I’m also curious what you think of “Jugulator”. I think it’s their worst studio album ever – WAY too “speed/thrash” for me. Love the vocals by Tim Owens (who totally sounds like Halford in much of the album), but I just can’t listen to that music. I’m also struggling with “Nostradamus” – but for different reasons.

Also - I’m not repeating this to try to “convert” you but because I think you are missing out on some AWESOME Priest tracks – PLEASE listen to the links on the previous page (that means all the way through, end to end, more than once! :) ) I really don’t see what’s not to like if you appreciate classic Priest. If you do this and still don’t like them – I will admit a crushing defeat at the hands of my peers, if you decide they are good - you owe me a beer (heck - owe me a beer anyways - I never turn down alcohol from friends  )

Anyways – here’s the “Spike likes these” list – wouldn't mind hearing other peoples thoughts and preferences.

Nope.
Might surprise you to know that after Screaming for Vengeance, which I consider their pinacle.
My next favorites are Stained Class, and Sad Wings, Sin After Sin.
In that order.

For me, they quit making anything worth bothering with after Defenders. The rest just didn't grab me. A few somewhat decent songs here and there, but nothing I would want to go out and buy.

Press release from today - K.K. Downing retires - replacement announced.
  • "British metal gods JUDAS PRIEST have announced that original guitarist K.K. Downing has formally retired from the band and will therefore not be joining them on their forthcoming Epitaph Tour. The band respect his decision and naturally all wish him well. Having thought long and hard about how to proceed, singer Rob Halford, guitarist Glenn Tipton, bassist Ian Hill and drummer Scott Travis unanimously agreed that they should go ahead with the tour and not let fans around the world down."

Wow!

Given the "animosity" that used to be shared between the Priest and Maiden camps, the fact this guy is from Lauren Harris' outfit made me smile.

i really think KK is just tired of doing it . . . for now. this was supposed to be a FINAL tour, now there's talk of doing more albums with only limited engagements (probably festivals). with talk like that, what's the point of having a final tour when it was supposed to end?!?!?!

That's an obvious conclusion to draw, but no. I recall a few bits and pieces from "Sounds" back in the 80's (weekly UK-based music newspaper), but the Neil Daniels "Defenders Of The Faith" book reminded me when I read it last year. Since the "interweb machine" didn't exist back then, the Sharon Osbourne / Bruce & Rod thing is WAY better known.

I agree regarding Ms. Harris - I didn't like the material - although she did seem to have an OK voice.

That's what I've heard from the folks back 'ome. He'll be 60 later this year and his passions are divided (if you'll excuse the joke) - I guess his Golf club takes up a lot of his time now.
relikizan wrote: .... at least the scorps are ending it eventually; heard they just added another leg to their final tour ....

Dates were always open to addition - they just said this would be the final studio album and the final World-wide tour. I don't think either Priest OR Scorps are like Kiss (and you can take THAT both ways as well  )

Yeah, I remember the stuff between JP and IM.
JP complained that IM used their time as opening act in 82 to learn some of their tricks and tactics for putting on successful shows.
Then of course went out on their own and were bigger, which kind of left a bad taste in JPs mouth.

I don't remember IM ever really saying anyting about JP though.

And also, remember that Maiden had Rob open on the BNW tour.
And Rob and Bruce teamed up for a single. (One You Love To Hate)

So, I think a lot of the old 'water under the bridge' and egos have been put aside.

There is NO bad feeling between the bands nowadays, KK himself points out that they are all good mates now.

Back then, the rivalry was initiated by Di'anno who gave an interview in Sounds in Feb/March 1980 (just before them supporting Priest on the "British Steel" tour in the UK) where he said Maiden would "blow the bollocks off Priest". Things got a little bit worse after that before everything calmed down years later.

You know, the band calling it quits may have been something to just appease KK. Maybe KK convinced the band to continue on without him? That whole thing of the band being Rob, KK, and Glenn. But with KK's blessing, they will continue in a part-time form.

K.K. has issued the following press release:
  • "Dear friends,

It is with much regret that I will not be with you this summer. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your concerns about my health. Please rest assured that I am O.K.

There has been an ongoing breakdown in working relationship between myself, elements of the band, and the band's management for some time.

Therefore I have decided to step down rather than to tour with negative sentiments as I feel that this would be a deception to you, our cherished fans.

However I would urge you to please support the Priest as I have no doubt that it will be a show not to be missed.

    All my love and respect."

Okay, key words to notice here, " . . . this summer." probably dropped out as a bargaining chip and really hope this isn't the case, if he comes back in the fall though, we'll know why.

I finally found a copy of Jugulator and maybe I should give it a few more listens but it just isnt hooking me in like Painkiller did.Its an ok album so far though.Maybe it will grow on me with a few more listens....
As much as I like Painkiller, and the other albums, none are as timeless as Defenders of the Faith, and Screamin For Vengeance. Those two could be played in any year along with other great albums from other bands and never get old.

the "last tour this" or "final tour and last studio album that" or scorps and priest not like them(other bands) etc etc yawn yawn.same old same old.at the end of the day if your a fan you don't want to see them go,the only thing you lose is the live experiance but you always have their albums, here they live on.here in the u.k priest are now touring halls, very little arenas over here,i was surprised by this.from what i understand bands now make their most income from tours.maybe it will be a "lets still do albums every now and again and one date tour only, that way hopefully we get all fans in one field, one payment, one 2 hour gig.easy money, less work.can anyone actually see any big band "retireing",only in touring.they can release unreleased stuff for years these well established bands...and they will. kkeerrching!

Jugulator was a real one-off for them (thank goodness), and I find it to be a wall of noise. It’s certainly bottom of the pile on my playlist out of all their albums. I thought you’d cope with it better than me because you like a lot of rawer material that I don't.

It will be interesting to hear what you think of “Demolition” when you pick up a copy.

It was good to have it confirmed earlier this week that they will be releasing new material after they have finished this last "world tour".
