Just need to b!tch...
When my son was born, my scale modeling stuff was evicted from the spare bedroom, to the attic. After getting it to look like a proper room - wall board, carpet etc..., the next big thing was an AC. A typical summer day here in SI can get into the 90s for days on end. I never measured but figured that meant the attic had to be over 100.
I had one of those portable ones, and while it wasn't powerful enuff to "cool" the room, it was good enuff to drop the temps to the high 70s/low 80s. Well last week that AC crapped out. Dead.
Being retired I only get my pension check once a month and will have to wait until I can get another AC for the room.
It's a lot of trouble to take all in need and bring it down to a table, so I've been going cold turkey with the building and painting. It was such a part of my day that I looked forward to, that having to abstain - - - I HATE it!
Just need to vent.

Well, it's easy to see by your prodigious output that you enjoy the hobby; hope you get your AC soon, so we'll have more cool stuff to look at!

How much do you expect the AC knock you back? (including taxes).

Re: Just need to b!tch...
Thanks guys.
MHS: I can prolly get one for $200. But with 2 expensive trips to the auto mechanic already this month and it's nearing the end of the month (my check comes on the 1st).
I guess it's my own doing, but I rather not put it on credit, when I can wait a week or so and pay cash.

The week should go by quick - and I guess it's something to look forward to!
$200 ain't too bad - the ones we were looking at here clock in at around $450 + tax.

I'm with ya, Kev. We just moved across the country and my workshop is now in the garage. I've got a couple fans running, but it can get a bit brutal in there. Hopefully I can install a small AC unit at some point, but for now I just have to suck it up and drink lots of gatorade.

Re: Just need to b!tch...
My workshop is in my garage, too - its 102 today. BUT - we have 16% humidity. So its quite tolerable in there. And as soon as the Delta breeze starts (when the sun starts to set) I can open the front and rear of the garage and the temperature drops back to 80 or lower). A little better than when I used to live back East!!!!Zeiram wrote:I'm with ya, Kev. We just moved across the country and my workshop is now in the garage. Kev - 7 years ago I was living in a condo with a flat tar roof garage. Tried working in there with the biggest portable AC they had at Costco. It maybe lowered it from 120 to 110. So I spent two years unable to do any modeling work for 6+ months out of the year. It sucks. Good luck with your new AC!

No worries. The admins grabbed it so fast I didn't even see it. And from "her" moniker, I don't I wanted to...Heavy Metal Spike wrote:I notified staff - posts (and idiot) should be gone soon.JasonD wrote:Who the hell is this Bridgettyr16 that is posting all these porn links?

BF-Al : A friend and fellow modeler (he doest WW@ stuff) is in So Cal and has his stuff in the garage. He has pretty much the same conditions where it'll be hot but the lo humidity makes it easy to work in. IIRC only a total of a few short weeks a year is bad enuff where he has to put his projects on hold.
While investigating a new AC, I watched a vid from Consumer Reports, when they covered the portable ones, they mentioned that whatever the quoted BTU number is, you can cut that in half for the real BTU value. So whats why we both didn't really get what we paid for...

There's a couple of other new users now posting the same stuff. it sucks in winter being in California, as bad as our winter was this year.
I do my hobby work on kitchen table.

Re: Just need to b!tch...

I guess it depends WHERE in California you are. Here in the Sacramento Valley the most I have to do is to put on a sweatshirt or a light jacket and a hat if I want to work in the garage in the Winter.
Today, OTOH, it was TOO HOT (107 degrees). And no Delta Breeze this evening. It sucks because I was really looking forward to sparing an hour to work on three projects that I've got going ...scuzzfink85 wrote:I live in California, I have friend that does his hobby in garage

Maybe look into getting a stronger one than the ones you found in your original research - that way you'll REALLY make things comfortable.
