Pachyrhinosaurus' Buildups

#1 Post by Pachyrhinosaurus »

I acquired this pair almost three years ago and hadn't touched them until this spring. Only now did I get around to working on them again. They are the tyrannosaurus and triceratops from David Krentz's Shapeways, painted after the ones from Dinosaur Revolution, as was my original intent when I bought them.

These are my first ever Shapeways models. The log will be eventually glued down to hold the rex in place. I also have an antediluvian tupuxuara I plan on painting like the sideshow one.

Wow, that's pretty accurate to the documentary! Well done.

yeah the paints do look good.
but why is it all rough looking? like snow in a can was sprayed on them and then they were painted.

was that an effect you were going for? just curious. looks cool.

Unfortunately, this is what all the Shapeways dinos look like - that "sandpapery" look & feel. I have many and they look better from a few feet away than close up. Still can't beat the prices, though.

You're absolutely right, however I think it worked kind of well with the rex because it had big scales in the TV show. I'll probably buy something in a better quality material next time. They're also very small, 1/144 scale, so the rex is less than three inches in total length and so the graininess is more obvious.

I think the "Strong, Flexible" have the grainy surface. That all goes away with the "Detail" versions.
It's more expensive, but IMHO I'd rather have fewer models with lotsa detail than a lot of sandpapery models.

I bought this allosaurus when they first came out, however the tail had broken off shortly after so I replaced him with a new one. Recently, though, I made him a new tail and gave a total makeover, and now my original allosaurus has taken the place of his replacement on my shelf. The colors are based on Dinosaur Revolution. As well as the tail, I added spines and beefed up the neck area which bothered me in the original. These photos were taken before I sprayed it with a varnish which gave it a bit of a shine. The middle spine has also broken off but since it is not very noticeable, I painted over the spot as opposed to making a new one.

I love the rust color on the head of the Triceratops. Very cool.
