Suggest a good introduction to tabletop gaming?
Hi folks.
Lucky me, there's a terrific gaming store in Colorado Springs. It's called The Yellow King and it's run by a garage-kit producer, Mark Krabbenhoft. I plan to visit there soon and start learning a bit about gaming.
In the meantime, can anyone here suggest a good starting point? Maybe a good book to check out before buying anything? I haven't found RPG for Dummies yet, but perhaps it exists.
Thanks.

Re: Suggest a good introduction to tabletop gaming?
Are you looking for a good RPG or tabletop/miniature game? Big differences.
The things you own end up owning you. It's only after you lose everything that you're free to do anything.
Re: Suggest a good introduction to tabletop gaming?
For either genre the rules will vary between games.
For tabletop do you fight in skirmishes, campaign and what are your unit sizes.
The old Fasa games were quiet good, games workshop rules vary editions.
Ancients(Historical warfare) are quiet complex too.

Re: Suggest a good introduction to tabletop gaming?
I'm already demonstrating my ignorance, I know. I'm interested in the miniatures, sparked by the Mars Attacks figures featured in the latest AFM and spurred on by a chance remark from my wife. Got to get to the Yellow King and check some things out.
Re: Suggest a good introduction to tabletop gaming?
You can always just get the Mars Attacks Miniatures game, its quite good. The real question is what are you into (subject matter - robots?, zombies?. Scifi?, fantasy?) how many people are you playing with (solo, one other person or a group) and what kind of play do you want (complex strategy?, co-operative play? lucky die rolling?) I'm an avid board gamer and with a little more info I'm sure I can give you some suggestions.

Re: Suggest a good introduction to tabletop gaming?
If you're into minis games, rather than strategy games such as Ticket to Ride or Carcasson (sp?) then there are quite a few depending on genre. Descent 2 is a great sword & sorcery type of game with unpainted monster and player minis. Spacehulk was re-released a few years ago and is a lot of fun, if you can find one not horribly marked up in price. Blood Bowl, a no holds barred football game between teams of Orcs, Goblins, etc. also comes with mins for the two teams and was recently re-released so it should be readily available. Mansions of Madness, though I haven't played it, looks interesting with the players being Investigators checking out haunted houses full of monsters.
Technically not a mini game, though it provides about five of them for the players, is Betrayal at House on the Hill. A very fun game where at one point one of the players secretly becomes the creature/murderer/? that the rest of the group is seeking.
https://boardgamegeek.com is a good resource to see what's out there in all types of games.
Oh, and if you like games at all, buy and play a copy of https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/2453/blokus with friends and family. It's unbelievably addictive. Despite looking like a kids game, it is very very sneaky and is a challenge for all ages.

Re: Suggest a good introduction to tabletop gaming?
Thanks, guys. I did find the Mars Attacks game for about $30 plus shipping. Maybe I'll grab that. Will check out the other suggestions as well.
I love monster stuff, but I'd like to check out something I can play with my daughters ... who don't love zombies, even though Daddy does.
Started looking at Mansions of Madness. Love it.

Check out Godzilla: Kaiju Wars. It should be fun to play with your daughters. It comes with a lot of mini buildings and 4 classic Godzilla monsters. they are prepainted but you can always strip them and repaint them better.

Playing with daughters? Mice and Mystics. Great production value, easy to pick up, and a lot of fun.

My daughter also loves Talisman and Super Dungeon Explorer.

Lots of great games without minatures as well, but I'm guessing that might matter to you.

The miniatures are certainly part of the draw for me. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check them out for sure. Just discovered Dave & Adam's Card World online.
