Sealing foam help needed.

#1 Post by rob_03 »

I was wondering if anyone has any tips. I'm using foam for bases and scenics and normally I seal it with Aves Apoxie paste mixed with some acrylic texturiser.
The last batch of Apoxie paste wasn't great and is difficult to use.

I need something that will give a hard surface, rather than a PVA and I'm based in the UK.

it Depends on what ttype of foam you are talking about ,
Balsa Foam --I seal with either Gesso or Mod Podge
Pink or Blue foam -Duhams Water putty

if you are using the Pink /blue foam you should check out You tube there are some great tips from
Train Hobbyist.

I use a lacquer clear coat that I brush on. Works great (stinks a bit though while drying).

I'm using DuPont 480s clear, but you could also probably get away with brushing on testors gloss coat, thinned with a little lacquer thinner. I would only use this on Balsa Foam (or similar). Pink or blue foam it might dissolve.

I use Foam Coat which is also a bit stinky but seals a variety of foams - and even styrofoam.
It dries to a plasticky matt surface a bit like PVA. I see you're in the UK - The 4D Model Shop and Tiranti's stock it or the site is:

Rob,
I also use Durham's Water Putty to cover foam pieces in my dioramas. Dries rock hard.

I can't remember where I read it, but I read a review a while back about a product from DecoArt called MagiKote. The reviewer seemed to really like it, and said it sealed foam as well as resin did, but for far, far cheaper.

Just to keep from having to start a new topic, how does sealing with Mod Podge work? You just brush it on, straight from the bottle, and it doesn't obscure any detail? I've seen David Fisher use resin, like in his ModelMania DVDs, and was going to try that, but thought I'd look for cheaper alternative first... Is Mod Podge really that easy to use in this instance? lol

whatever you end up using, resin,Gesso or Mod,make sure that you carved in your lines deep enough.
I dilute my Mod Podge a little with water 3/4 mod rest water but it dries slowly.Gesso is also very Heavy ,you can dilute that also a little
.
Using resin would give it a nice hard shell.
