I just received an email from Andy Yanchus regarding this. He said he passed on Tuesday, April 7. He was 95 years old. Apparently he had been suffering from dementia for several years.
For those of you who don’t know who he was, he was one of the primary freelance sculptors at Aurora Plastics during the 60s and 70s. Among his great body of work is the following (This list was taken from the email I got from Andy).
John F. Kennedy, Dempsey vs. Firpo, the flag raisers at Iwo Jima, Doctor Dolittle, Captain America, Superboy and Tarzan! He contributed to the Prehistoric Scenes series with the Saber Tooth Tiger, Cave Bear and Tar Pit. But, his monsters were some of his favorites and his greatest claim to fame – The Bride of Frankenstein, Godzilla and Ghidrah.
Rest in peace Mr. Myers, you bless a great many of us with your skill and talent!

Re: Ray Meyers Passes away at 95
that is sad news I remember talking to him at Wonderfest telling me how they used a solid block of acetate plastic to carve out the kits, he was a very nice man Rest in Peace

I’ve heard that he and Bill Lemon were both really great guys. That’s awesome that you got to meet him. I’m sure talking to fans of his work really blessed him alot.
Yeah, I’ve also heard that about the acetate being used as a sculpting medium. Seems kind of weird to me, but there’s got to be a reason for it.

What an amazing thing it was to meet Ray Myers at Wonderfest. He had brought a lot of the tools of his craft with him and he patiently explained how he had used them to create the legends of Aurora. The thick block of acetate was there and what looked sort of like dremel style tools. To go from the block to the Bride was quite an achievement!
