Question: Need help with diorama....

#1 Post by sktch4fn »

Hi again guys!

I have one more question. I thought about doing an alien holding his ray gun and behind him a wall with a big hole on it as if he just shot at it with his laser and walk through it. Dioramas are not my forte so I have no idea how to approach this. I also thought about a fence being burned and he walks through it... Or even maybe a road sign with a hole in the middle to show he shot at it because he thought it was a person.... I want to show on the diorama that something happened a few seconds ago.

Open to any ideas....Any tips or suggestions?

Thank you

E.

Sounds interesting.

I'd go with a ring of fiber optics like the way a glowing ember would briefly appear at the edge of burning paper. The strands could go back to different color LEDs (red/orange/yellow) for variety. If you really wanted to get crazy, a slow blink for even more variety.
Plausible deniability.

An acquaintance used red glitter to good effect on a Star Trek diorama - I can't recall if this was to enhance the effect, or was the effect, but perhaps mixed with gold glitter and used sparingly it might indicate glowing embers of a ray-gun blast

I was thinking maybe the focus of his blasting could be a movie poster or advertising. The poster would have a blast hole through it, the edges red and curling from the heat. The wall behind it could be charred and pitted. Now what image would have led the Saucerman to unload his blaster? Marvin the Martian? Predator? Depends also if one would want to go with the era of the original Saucermen.

FWIW, IMHO the simpliest would be to cut out the hole of what ever the alien was shooting at and have the edges charred. Maybe a tiny twirl of the cotton from a QTip to indicate it was once hot. Then maybe below the hole have a little pyramid pile of ashes. That could be done with a little mound of spackle or something like CelluClay, and while wet sprinkle sand on it for the granularity.
I don't know if your alien is comic style or not so the exaggeration of the blast could be adjusted accordingly. Just my 2¢.

A little bright orange paint here and there on the edge of the hole will look like still-glowing red-hot metal.

Here, you can see it where the heat ray hit the ground:

That is also a great idea... I need to find out how to do that effect....

I'm still trying to figure out what to do as a small diorama... I like the wall with a poster burned but I also like the idea of a fence with a whole like in T-2... don't know what to do yet :(

Or go all in with the proper diameter of fiber optics and recreate
the fence. Aluminum tube for top and bottom, feed thru the FO.
Red Led each end, paint, clip out void apply power.

I guess its a matter of what its for and how far you want to take the effect

I really like the idea of the chainlink fence. You could just drybrush the chainlink edges in black, red and orange. Very simple to paint.
