How I Spent My Summer (and a Fall 43 years ago)

#1 Post by overspray »

I haven't built a ship kit in a few decades, but a few years ago my brother gave me a kit of the ship I was on. For some odd reason it seemed like a good idea to recreate a scene in my cruisebook which showed my ship and our sister ship crossing the equator at the International Date Line. By virtue of crossing at the intersection of these two lines, I was bestowed the title of Golden Shellback. So I have that going for me.

Actually, the real truth is that crossing the equator is just an excuse for a ritualistic hours-long hazing to transform the Pollywogs (those who have never crossed the equator on a naval ship) to Shellbacks. (A Golden Shellback is one that has crossed the equator at the International Date Line.)

Since you can now buy a dizzying array of aftermarket accurizing pieces, that also seemed like a good idea at the time. However, I don't wish on anyone the painstaking and time consuming effort to add all the railing, ladders, antennas, etc. Many times I came close to chucking the project. The decals were a pain as well because they were so old. I had to create many of them and then I clodded up and put the railings on before the decals, which created a lot more work. I also had to scratch build the helo fuselage as I couldn't find the correct 1/700 scale helo. There are a ton of details that are not accurate to the ship as it was configured at the time, but I could have spent months and months doing that. It took several months the way it is.

I have new respect for the guys that do ship models, but doubt I'll do another soon.

That's really cool. Awesome water effects and the ships look excellent. If you struggled with these I can't tell they are perfect.

Looks great. I don't really know what I am looking at to pick out all the details, but I am sure you knew what you were doing :)

Fantastic work!!! (I did my 1/200 Yamato back in 2007-09 after over 30 years not doing a single ship. Its my most complex build - and like you, I don't think I'll ever try to do another ship).

Nice work Dennis - a classy 3d visual enhancement to the memories you already have - and it's the result of a hobby you love - a win/win :thumb2:

The water-effects on their own are impressive, let-alone the ships!

Well-done for sticking with it - it was worth the effort.

I thought at first it was an unrep op going on because that’s always fun...that is so cool you built the ship you sailed. I sailed Merchant and I am as always on the look out for some old rust bucket tramp tanker to build I haven’t seen any close to what I was on. You did a great job with this I too like the water affects and it’s great you kept your King Neptune certificate.

You said it! Especially at 2 in the morning on a moonless night and the other ship being twice your size. Good times.

Thanks for your comments!
