Southern California Gundam Model Competition on November 14th in Fullerton, California.
As the name implies, the emphasis is on Gundam robot models, but they welcome pretty much anything for show and sharing - anime character figure kits, Star Wars/Star Trek ships, etc. These are guys that invaded IPMS shows with colorful robots, so they know what it's like being a little unconventional.
My first time going was last year's show, and I saw the gamut of modeling skills displayed, from crudely constructed (but fun and whimisical) doll-house dioramas put together by giggling college girls with anime-colored hair to truly, I mean, truly world-class mecha and Gundam modeling.
If you're new to modeling, there are hands-on demos, and if you're an old collector, you may see things on the vendor tables you never knew existed or wanted. I resisted buying a vintage resin Gundam ZZ kit on one of the vendor tables, and still have that one-that-got-away regret about it.
