Anybody else find it rather "heartwarming" that this thread has jumped to 3 pages fairly quickly? Nice to see so much reading going on.

I'd say a 14 year old could handle it. For the most part it's done as a documentary and is pretty dry (I found it a boring book). There are different narrative styles throughout the book depending on who he is talking to as they tell their story. No sex that I can recall. Some of the stories are violent though (soldiers actively fighting zombies). I remember one used F* a few times but it's in character and not excessive.

Currently reading Wit'ch Storm by James Clemens, bk II of "The Banned and The Banished."

Before that read Darth Bane: Path of Destruction by Drew Karpyshyn. Those Star Wars novels are kind of hit or miss, in my experience, but that one was pretty cool.

One of my all time favorite novels and films also!

Zombiezilla wrote:I loved The Alienist but found Angel more forced. What's the kids name, Stevie? Since he becomes the main character and was a kid Carr had to find ways of keeping him around the proceedings to move the story forward, which lead to odd situations where he was in the heating ducts and such. I just wish he had kept the main character the same as the first book.

I've tried to read Dan Simmons Sci-Fi stuff, but in all honesty Sci-Fi confuses me something terrible. So many phrases and words that you are expected to just know. I spend twice as long reading Sci-Fi as I do anything else just because of how many times I have to re-read everything.

Everybody can quit pointing and laughing now. :D
The whole business with Stevie finding ways of eavesdropping in order to fill in the narrative is pretty contrived to me at times also. Very forced... but Carr is great at all the period details so his books are fun to read, especially when he brings in historic context and real characters of the time.

If you want something a bit more fantasy but similar to Carr's books (in that they are thrillers based in a historic period) I really liked The List Of 7 and The 6 Messiahs. Sorry, can't recall the author right off, but I loved these 2 books. They were a bit further "out there" and even had some zombies in the first one as I recall.

Mark Frost. Read both of those a few years ago. Also agree they're worth reading.

Geez, that takes me back. Used to get those down here in Oz when I was a kid, don't see them much anymore.
