vinyl is hollow, usually need to be filled to keep it from 'melting'/bending

what is the best material for filling? expanding foam?

everyone has their favorites...
expanding foam is too unpredictable/uncontrollable IMHO
mountains-in-minutes is similar & easier to control
durham's water putty
resin (gets real hot may ruin vinyl)
crumpled up newspaper JAMMED into hollow areas
i like the newspaper and/or durhams options...
