QUESTION...Best paint lines???

#1 Post by scorvi »

I was wondering what everyone uses I have been using Freak Flex and Garage Kit Colors. I was wondering what is a good substitute for Garage Kit Colors Flesh. Since it is NOT available anymore??

Also paint thinners too for each line. Any recommendations?? I need to restock my depleting Garage Kit colors Flesh paints.

I predominantly paint large scale Female, Superhero and Sci-Fi personality pieces.

I just use craft acrylics. Delta Ceramcoat was my favorite brand, but they seem to be out of business. Luckily I have a ton of it in my stash.

I thin it with water.

I think they are quite abundant in JoAnn's and Hobby Lobby.

Scorvi - Do you use brushes or an airbrush? I use mostly Freak Flex, but almost never hand paint or thin.

I use Liquitex Artist Acrylics and mix my own colors. They are available at http://www.dickblick.com or Michaels.

I paint mostly with an airbrush for the large scale kits. I brush paint details and the smaller kits

Yes, but they're not restocked. Most of what you find has been sitting there for a few years now; lots of my favorite colors are no longer found anywhere.

Now, as to the question at hand.
I don't think there is any one best paint line.
I use a variety of lines and types of paints. Enamels, acrylics, oils, watercolors, inks. Various brands of each.
I just use what works for me, for the effect I am trying to achieve.
I still have a ton of the craft paint, but I have found myself buying more and more miniature paints. They are more expensive, but they cover so much better and also airbrush easier than the craft paint.

This is what my paint collection looked like over a year ago.

Since then, I have added over a dozen inks, almost a dozen oils, and probably 3 dozen mini paints of various brands. Especially speedpaints, and contrast paints.

What I do, is just try a couple colors from a line to decide if I like it or not. I'm not into buying big huge sets. When I need a color or two, I just pick up something that looks like what I need. That way I can try it, if I like it, I will buy more when I need more colors. If not, I will look elsewhere. Some cover better. Some blend better. Other airbrush better.
I have not found one paint brand that will do everything I need well, which is why I own such a variety.

I agree with Trevor - just buy a couple of bottles and see if they work for you.

And thanks for the link - I'll try it when I need more paint. I hope it's not the same one I tried awhile ago - I loaded up the cart, and when I went to checkout, there was a "problem with stock" for every single item. Grrrrr.....

My fav is Vallejo paints - the Model Color and Model Air lines. Tho I do have some Game Color - but those colors are highly saturated.
I also use Citadel and Army Painter washes. Nice stuff.

Have you tried any contrast paints, or speedpaints yet?
Game changers in certain situations.

Hi,

Yes, I tried and sorta use when I remember the Army Painter variety. If you're looking for a quick paint up, or play miniatures game and aren't really a painter it's perfect.

For those that don't know, these paints are inbetween a wash and a regular paint. The idea is to paint your miniature a matte white. Then paint with the contrast paints the paint will fill in the deeper crevices creating a shadow while still coloring in the other areas creating a highlight. The more people played with the Army Painter brand it was that if you wanted to add a 2nd coat, when you applied it, it reactivated the first layer creating a bit of a mess. Hense the idea of a quick paintup and on to your game.
I've seen online that Citadel (very expensive) and the Vallejo brand doesn't reactivate.

Then different painters found a better way w/o having to buy a whole new paint set. You only have to get a Matte Medium, and mixed it with the regular paints.

Whats also done differently is to first prime the figure black. Then heavily drybrush the figure with gray, so the black only remains in the deepest crevices. Finally heavily drybrush again with white, so the white only lands on the highest spots. The more white that goes on the model the more saturated the colors will appear. If you goof a color you just have to let it dry and then re-prime that lil area in whichever primer color was under the goof, then when dry, repaint

The technique is for whatever reason called "Slap chop." Search that and you'll find 100s of videos. Haha I plan on trying it soon and will post here if someone hasn't beaten me to it.

FYI Army Painter just released version 2.0 of their speedpaint, and it doesn't reactivate.
Which is kind of a bummer, because that reactivation was great for blending a transition.

I love it for base coats on smaller parts of the model. Little detail stuff that you don't want to spend a ton of time futzing with.
Also can be good for tinting black parts, since it doesn't really cover the black but it does give it a hue to add some variety.

(if you can't tell, I love experimenting with things to see what works and what doesn't)

I hear ya. I too am always looking for the next new thing to try.
Not so much here since we love painting figures, but I did a quick seminar at my local model club meeting las year for the guys that do armor and planes etc... A super easy way to paint their figures so their "X" tank doesn't look so static. ;)

PS - I didn't hear about Army Painter 2.0. Good news
