Re: Demos?
Crazy Joe's demo on quick details was great. Especially the stippling technique to create freckles and other, natural-looking skin variation.
You know it's not a good day when it starts out with, "Hey boss, we've got a weird one for you."
Re: Demos?
That sounds great. Did anyone photograph or take videos of the demos? I believe there was an eye demonstration as well. WOuld love to see these techniques....maybe some CH members can brief us on their techniques with a pic or two?RLobinske wrote:Crazy Joe's demo on quick details was great. Re: Demos?
I was there but behind my table the whole weekend, so I didn't get to see any of the demos. I'd love some pics or video...

Re: Demos?
What is the incentive to actually attend a demo if you can watch a video instead?
Sure, we all have things we'd rather do and people we want to hang with, but guys like Jason Walker and Dan Colonna and Joe Nejberger and Mike Wallace and Dave Fisher take time out of their day and their own experience in the contest room or the dealer room to share with folks at the show, and the stuff you learn while seeing these guys share in person is priceless.
Besides, wouldn't you rather watch Steve Riojas paint live - where you can interact with him, ask questions, and marvel at his talent - than on a DVD?
For me the demos are part of the Wonderfest experience. I love sitting in a packed house with a palpable energy, smelling the paint, hearing the compressor cycle, and watching as guys I respect and admire teach me all sorts of stuff I did not know.

Agreed, but this is difficult for those of us stuck in Scandinavia, Marc.FilmMkr wrote:What is the incentive to actually attend a demo if you can watch a video instead?

And also difficult, as I already mentioned, for those of us stuck behind a booth. Believe me, I'd MUCH rather see them in person - and absolutely would have if I could, but it just wasn't possible.gorgosaurus wrote:Agreed, but this is difficult for those of us stuck in Scandinavia, Marc.FilmMkr wrote:What is the incentive to actually attend a demo if you can watch a video instead?

Re: Demos?
Sure, agree on every point.....but couldnt make it. I get what you are referring to that those attended should see it live and i personally would have if i went. I doubt the same demos will be done year after year so i guess it was my loss for not attending the show.FilmMkr wrote:What is the incentive to actually attend a demo if you can watch a video instead?

Re: Demos?
i caught:
jason walker and dan colonna on human skin tones...
steve riojas on dinosaur painting...
TOTALLY agree with marc that being there is the way to go...for those NOT able to catch the seminars, DVDs would rule...hell for those of us there, DVD would rule...
the comedy, information, personal interaction with all three presenters was GOLDEN...and tom grossman & crazy joe there as 'masters of ceremonies' added a TON to the overall experience...
i'll post some stuff on steve's dino painting later...will be back with link to the thread

Re: Demos?
I recorded my Panel Painting demo with two video cameras (thank you Vern Clark!). It was a hardware demo, for getting epic detail on your spaceship kits. It was originally an article concept that I was working up, and will be published later in the year. I'd like to put it together and throw it up for viewing shortly (if the video looks okay that is).
I don't have a problem with people posting videos of demos after the event, but you will always get more out of it in person.

Re: Demos?
I managed to catch 3 demos this year.
(which in itself is a minor miracle)
Joe's glazing and drybrush demo.
Steve's dino painting demo (continuation of Joe's)
Joe's quick tips.
All were great!
Got a lot of useful info (seeing it done is always better than reading how to do it)
Had a blast watching them work, and listening to them talk.
As well as being able to ask questions as they went. The open interaction really brings the demos to life.
The only negative comment I have is with the lighting for the video assist. Really washes out the color on what they are working on.
What you see on the screen, looks nothing like what is actually in their hand.
Not sure, but would some of those 'natural light' bulbs help that?

Re: Demos?
The primary problem was in the projector, Trev. He had one of the guns on that puppy going south, hence the greenish-yellow cast.tay666 wrote:The only negative comment I have is with the lighting for the video assist. Really washes out the color on what they are working on.

Course the camera was a cheap-o, too, but I don't think that was the issue.

Re: Demos?
Thanks so much everyone, for your comments, good and bad. Ed the AV dude realizes where we are short - he's going to make some changes that will make the viewing better.
I'm already planning the next year's demo schedule - A very, VERY, cool diorama demo is planned, and a rescheduled demo on oil paint details. I may give the sculpting tag-team demo a break for another year, but I definately want to bring that back for 2013, once we clean up from the end of the world. Tom and I will once again have the rank-neophyte airbrush hands-on for Sunday Morning. Some more BASIC CONSTRUCTION demos are in the mix, too. And a very, very, cool and informative panel concerning judging models, with emphasis on Wonderfest.
And I would be amiss if I didn't thank profusely, all of the mega-talents who made up this year's demo program. Jason, Dan, Kristina, Steve, Tom, David, and Marc, I can't thank you guys enough.
Chick -

Re: Demos?
Good to hear that the crack teem is already on top of the issue.
I didn't think we had that problem in the past (at least I didn't remember it from previous years demos)
Sounds like some good idea for next year.
And give some thought to my suggestion please.
Brushes - types, uses, and care.
Would do wonders for those of us who couldn't tell the difference between a spotter, or a liner. And have no idea what the numbers, or the names mean.

Re: Demos?
This may seem like pretty basic stuff, but how about a "Colors" class. Not so much mixing color, because the pre-mixed paint market has that pretty well covered. I'm thinking more about the thought process that goes into choosing a color palette that's right for the subject, and then carrying it all the way through the painting process. I've seeen some nice models fall short because the overall paint scheme did not work as well as it could have. I know it's an area where I can improve. Just a thought.

Re: Demos?
This is also something I'm considering. Perhaps I can combine that with the brush demo. A basic colour wheel explains this process very well. Ok, you demi-god colour experts who come to WF all of the time - Have I got a volunteer for this?Stormheart wrote:This may seem like pretty basic stuff, but how about a "Colors" class.
