Re: Jam # 115 I love the 80s.
I cut the Ice Titans arms off last night and repositioned them. Yea it sucked but well worth it. I also tried mineral spirits and lighter fluid to help get aves to stick to baked sculpey with no luck. I am not ignoring your advice Tim I was just too lazy to stop anywhere other than the beer store last night. Today at lunch I will snag some turpenoid.

Steve, do you have any snow down there in WV? 'Cuz that would be beyond toatally awesome to set that guy outside standing on a snow pile and get some pics of him in his natural element.
I'm guessing that far south though the snow is long gone?

try keying the surface with a dremel too; give the putty some thing to bite down on Steve. could be the surface is too smooth as well.

Re: Jam # 115 I love the 80s.
No snow at all this year except maybe two little showings (not that Charleston gets that much anyway). I actually had the Harley out cruising around town the other day.
According to Colin the ground freezes wherever the Titan walks and he actually has to break his feet away with each step. I will be painting the base with 1/2 grass and 1/2 ice and snow I bought two little scenic kits I am going to try for the base.
Tim - Dennis mentioned that earlier about roughing up the surface and one place I was trying to add spikes was already rough and the epoxy would just not grab and another place was smooth and same results. This seems to happen with the plumbers epoxy and the Aves. However the Aves stuck to the board perfectly.
I am wondering if the epoxy will grab on if the clay was painted with primer.
I did buy a jug of Weber turpenoid and luckily I had a 40% off coupon. If it works great and if not then I have one more brush cleaning agent.

Re: Jam # 115 I love the 80s.
sounds like the Aves is not too good. go for Duro or green stuff. when warm, it'll stick to anything Steve .
at least i dont get this trouble with wax !
break, weld, done.

Wax would be cool but I don't think acrylic paints work too well on wax.

Re: Jam # 115 I love the 80s.
yea, it does mean molds and all that stuff. apparently you can paint wax sculptures....
i may delve back in to sculpey some time. i went and saw one of the Bradley Smoker ovens. would work well for warming clays and waxes and curing epoxy and sculpey. more than enough psace for a quater scale in there too.
i'll have to save my pennies.........
(i use em alot!)

Re: Jam # 115 I love the 80s.
You may be right Tim that my Aves has gone sour. I took each tub out and kneaded it up really good and I could feel it getting super sticky. Then I used small pieces from each A and B and tried to add the spike back onto the Titan's face and it failed.
I know after reading Pop Sculpture I was ready to switch to wax that very night. So I figure at some point maybe a year or two from now I will try wax.
I went ahead and started working on the grass part of the scene last night.

Nice Ice Giant, scubasteve!
I used to paint portraits a while back, and it was always easy to capture likenesses if I used a grid. I figure the same approach might work in 3 dimensions as well!
I took vertical and horizontal measurements to different points of the profile picture I'm using (tip of nose, tip of upper lip, tip of chin, bridge of nose, forehead etc)and used them to build up a clay profile...

Then I started to add clay to build up the rest of the profile:

Re: Jam # 115 I love the 80s.
Ah Tim you know me well..............
Yes Semoet I do like it and look forward to seeing more of it. In a way I do agree the legs may need thinned down a bit but on the other hand... how does she run so fast if she doesn't have some nice muscle on those legs??
Sorry, I've had nothing to show lately. My MJ has been set aside waiting for me to have some time to really work on her which has been kinda difficult to find much time while I've been working 70+ hours a week. That's slowing down a bit now though so hopefully I'll get back to her soon. I have been working on a head a little here and there recently though but nothing that could be considered 80's though for sure. Trying to make myself and Ahsoka Tanno 1/4 mixed media statue to go with my Darth Talon premium format statue from Sideshow. I wanted to pick up the Aayla Secura statue from them to go with her but I just ended up really not liking it enough to spend $350 on her. So Aayla is still on my personal "to do" list. I had considered trying to do another Trap-Jaw for this jam... basing it on my previous head I did many jams ago but making a whole new piece with some revisions. I have really liked the whole Steampunk genre for years now and have always felt he'd be a good character to kinda mix the two together. Like make his jaw open and close with like a steam powered hydraulic like system of some sorts. Same with his mechanical arm. Eventually some day I'll get to all these planned pieces... some day.

Re: Jam # 115 I love the 80s.
semoet! What's up?
Cheetara is only 6 hours old? Nice!
You could probably thin her thighs down some if you're going for cartoon accurate, but like Jeremy said; "how does she run so fast if she doesn't have some nice muscle on those legs??". I imagine she'd have more of an Olympic runners physique in the real world.

Re: Jam # 115 I love the 80s.
RiteG - Is this a portrait study? Be cool if it is. That technique should work perfectly, usually what is shown on Brown's videos. Loving the progress shots as well.
Semoet - LoVe the features on Cheetara. As for shrinking the legs, I think its up to the artist's taste. Lion-O is more muscular than the cartoon but I love how it turned out. Trust your instincts and feel the force around you.
Scuba - I can't wait to see this painted up all cold and Ice-y.
I can't decide yet what to post for the next jam but all these excellent female figures are giving me an idea. Stay tuned.
