Nowhere near as good as the original, but the original is as close to perfection as anything can get. So, with that being said, this is pretty dang bada**. I like how much modernizing they do to it.tay666 wrote:Just heard this one today

Re: Your favorite "cover" songs
Yeah.
That, to me, is what makes a cover song good.
If a band changes it up a bit, but keep the integrity of the song intact.

Re: Your favorite "cover" songs
I love a ton of covers. Just about any by Johnny Cash and then some others
My Way by the Sex pistols (sample lyrics "To think.... I killed a cat")
Born to Run by Frankie Goes to Hollywood
I Fought the Law by Mike Ness (lead singer Social Distortion on solo CD)
Sweet Jane by Cowboy Junkies
Forever Young by Rod Stewart
and I love George Thorogood's version of Wanted Man

I like Ryan Adams cover of Wonderwall
And I also like Scarlett Johanssons cover album "Anywhere I lay my head". Like the original Tom Waits tracks better, but there is something original and unique to Scarletts voice that I digg

Re: Your favorite "cover" songs
Two best and most suprizing covers I've heard are James Brown's and Pavarotti's duet go at Brown's "It's a Man's World" and Johnny Cash's stunningly moving "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails.

Okay here are some I can think of.
Motley Crue Helter Skelter Live
Frank Marino and Mohagany Rush Purple Haze Live
Art of Noise featuring Tom Jones.... Kiss
Faith No More War Pigs
Primus Nativity in Black N.I.B. of course having Ozzy sing on it may not classify it as a cover.
Van Halen You Really Got Me
VH-1 Rock Honours Supergroup Rob Zombie, Gilbey Clark, Tommy Lee, Slash, Scott Ian, and Ace Frehley covering God Of Thunder..... Excellent!

One of my favorite performances from that concert. I highly recommend the DVDs, or CDs of those concerts.Scott M wrote:

How could I forget "Mad World"
One of the few cases, where the cover actually is better than the original.
I love "Tears for Fears", but their happyhappyjoyjoy'ish tune in "Mad World" just don't interpritate the text. The Michael Andrews version does that sooooo much better

They certainly did! I kind of like their cover of Sweet Leaf as well...
We may be the only two that know Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush!
even when I was a teen in the seventies I would mention this band and I always got the reply. "You mean Rush, don't you?"
Time has made them more obscure I would guess

Re: Your favorite "cover" songs
I'll play this game:
The Gathering's cover of Dead Can Dance's "In Power We Entrust The Love Advocated":
http://youtu.be/-_AdQS75ucI
Adrenaline Mob's cover of Duran Duran's "Come Undone" with guest vocals from Lzzy Hale:
http://youtu.be/3jmgviuBONc
Any of Mike Portnoy's tribute shows, specifically "Cygnus and the Sea Monsters" covering Rush; here's "Hemispheres":
http://youtu.be/ruIRu0Gypls
And anything by the Iron Maidens, such as this version of "The Trooper" that is rushed but still fun:
http://youtu.be/XebvpPtebaI
Last but not least... well, maybe least... there is the amazing band Steel Panther. Just look them up on YouTube. Words aren't sufficient to describe them, but they sure are a lot of fun.
