Maybe not the holy grail but definitely a solid, well made brush. I also have the Krome, which I got at last year's Airbrush Asylum at Monsterpalooza.

My two brushes have different sized needles and nozzles so I can't really say which one sprays the finer line. One thing that bugs me a bit about the Sotar is how close the trigger is to the paint cup. Also, since it was designed as an illustrator's brush, the paint cup is pretty small, so it's not great for laying down a bascoat or clear top coat. On the other hand, the small cup makes it easy to see the area where you're applying the paint.

Neither brush is any better or worse as far as tip dry goes. That it a function of the paint - how it's thinned and how finely ground the pigments are. Golden AB paints and the GK paints I've tried - no problem. Some of the Freak Flex paints - yikes! Like every other pass! :o

Holy Grail was probably a bad choice of words. More like Excalibur of brushes.. :D :D

I'll wait till RT to see if I can actually hold one and see if it talks to me. :P

if you lose it while cleaning or it wears down etc, the paint cup just bubbles up on you like there's a HUGE blocking of the tip...so you go back and try to clean it again, then try to spray paint & it bubbles back on ya...IT'S NOT CLOGGED!

here's a guy with that problem who didn't even get the 'right' answer from a badger rep :?:

solid review nothing about the problem discussed though

hey susan...the velocity/krome etc are supposedly the next level for badger...sotar used to be top of the heap until they came out with these...

so yeah, they'll spray a bit finer than the 20/20...but the construction of the sotar makes cleaning/adjusting MUCH easier...IMHO

I have one and it's my second favorite brush, behind the Iwata Custom Micron CMC+. But then again the Iwata is 3 times the price.

So yes, the 20/20 is a great brush for the price. :)

Cool John. Ill be getting the Krome and see how I like that. I find the Iwatas very easy to clean too.

I already bought a Badger hose adapter. So, I'm ready.

Just to clear up a couple things... The Krome is basically a Velocity, BUT with Sotar internals-mostly in the trigger system (NOT an improvement IMO). It also sports a slightly different handle than the standard Velocity, and is fully chrome plated as opposed to the gunmetal finish on all the Renegades. I do believe that any of the Sotar spraying parts (needles, nozzles) will work in the Krome as well.

If I had to pick between a Krome and a Sotar, I'd pick the Krome any day of the week, as the shape gets along better with my mitts, and it balances better for me.

The Sotar is still the "top of the line" Badger brush as far as detailing and illustration go. It also sports the highest average price of their brushes, but there is a reason you see them getting blown out for sub-$100 prices. I just can't get along with them very well for my own use. I like paint on my models, NOT my trigger finger!

I appreciate the head's up on this. I bought one that I'll probably use mostly at work painting fossil replicas, and it's sure as heck going to be better than the Harbor Freight Deluxe Airbrush normally available to me.

Looks like Amazon has already sold out what it had. Wonder if it will get more.

I owned one of these and as for me I hated it. Well constructed but just didn't fit my hand well and went back to my Iwata till I fell in love with the H & S line. Infinity changed my life till i picked up the Evolution. I paint alot on canvas as well as models and would like to say you shouldn't practice on how such a small thin line you can lay down, (you should be able to lay pencil lines with a .4) you should practice dagger strokes, dots and making lines go from small to big to small again.

I also cannot fathom why someone would use the 20/20 for illustration.

I guess what I am saying is whats good for someone might not be good for you. The best opportunity you can have is to try differant brushes and see which you like the best. If your new to airbrushing get no smaller than a .35 as you will be dealing with spits and clogs on a fine point set since you wont have reduction down pact. Practice and don't worry about mistakes as nothing good comes easy.

Good luck all on your purchases but I would rather get a Ultra.

Nice job though for finding the deal and sharing this.

P.S. not sure if said but tip dry is due to paint. Dont reduce with alcohol. A great reducer I found is wicked reducer 100. Would swear by it on models, canvas or gesso'd boards

If you are referring to an H&S Ultra, while they are a fine brush, I personally wouldn't recommend an Ultra. Yes, the needles and nozzles are interchangeable with other H&S brushes, but the the Ultra series has its own set of color cups that are EXCLUSIVE to that line of brushes. At that point, you would be better off with an Evolution Silverline...

All that said, you are 100% correct- different strokes for different folks. What feels right for some won't feel right for others, and different tools are needed for different jobs!

The Ultra was because of its price of 83.00 to be the closest to this special. I do have a Silverline that is my goto brush thank you very much. By the way here is a decent deal for the Krome with free shipping http://www.chicagoairbrushsupply.com/baairese.html

So, you prefer it over the Infinity? May I ask the reasons why? Love my Infinity, now you make me feel I am missing out!

I love my infinity also but my Silverline is my goto because the .4 needle is all. More versatile than my 1.5.I use it for canvas lately alot more than models

Different tool for a different job... I think he was referring to his excellent canvas and board painting. The Infinity can do everything the Evo can (and more), you just need to use the right nozzle/needle combo for your work. The only difference would be in the balance of the brush.

Didn't mean to speak for John, and I'm sure he'll have more to add...

Haha... he posted while I typed this!

Ok, so if I reconfigure my Infinity, I can do all the same things. For once, I have been talked out of an airbrush purchase! :D Thanks, fellas! :)

Thanks Bubba for the kind words on my paintings and for turning me on to the heroine i call H&S. Yes Miluzzu if you do reconfig and take time to practice and work with reduction it will outperform them all. IMHO

I just picked up one of these as it was cheap to buy from the UK.

I'm new to airbrushing and have only used the cheapo airbrushes that normally come in a set with the compressor, how do I do a back wash as the needle is sticking out beyond the cap?

Any help would be really appreciated .
