I've tried a couple of different brands with mixed results. How do the pan pastels react when hit with dullcoat? Do they dry lighter, or darker. I'm thinking of trying these; but I want to know how they dry first. If they dry darker... Well, I already have some that do that, and are cheaper.

I prefer the color being knocked down a bit as opposed to intensifying it.
Are you talking about the soft Rembrants Jim?

About a year ago, didn't one of our members post a link to a place that was selling an entire set (something like 80 colors, if I remember correctly) of Pan Pastels? These were only the tiniest amount of each... but looking for the thread and couldn't locate it. When I find that link, I'll likely order some.

I tried the Pan Pastels and they are great. Expensive, but good stuff.

What are the best pastels on the market? Heck, what are the best uses of pastels and how do you apply them. I was reading on using them on a face and used a bit of water and it looked like mud :| I've taken the Wonderfest class and they haven't really gone into pastels.
Would really like to hear so examples and how to apply for pastels.
Thanks,

I'd be interested in application techniques as well.

I too am interested in how an expert in using pastels applies them. I've been using MIG pigments and I really like them. I do wish they came in more colors. I just apply dry with a mop brush, and yeah, layer the color to get the intensity I want.

I recommend the article and YouTube Videos by Kathryn Loch on painting with dry pigments. She uses pastels - including Pan Pastels as well. Great techniques that I have used on a variety of kits. I have yet to use them exclusively on a figure or even a portion of a figure but I find them an excellent addition to the painting 'tool box.' Links below.
