My airbrushing is about to get a whole lot better

#1 Post by Patsox »

I know that isn't saying much for a hack like me, but I am so stoked to get painting (too bad there is so little time in the day).

I have only been airbrushing for about 2 years now. And I would go through fits and starts with the whole process. One day I would have a great painting day and the next I made a huge mess that would have me contemplating scraping modeling altogether. I did a lot of research before I bought my first brush, and thought it would be great.....but this little guy is one fickle friend.

This Iwata Eclipse is a fine tool, and it could totally be lack of experience and user error that at times had me frustrated during use. But I had to find out if there was something else out there that would help me fine tune my skill or lack-there-of. And after more research I found this baby!!

Wow, what a great piece of paint throwing bliss! Although I just got this beauty .... The Grex Tritium TG 03... I am in love. It came yesterday and I got to test drive her tonight. All I can say is wow! I am going to have fun with this tool.

I already notice 100% more control over the spray, my line quality improvement and my ability to control the output of paint.

More to come as I put it through the paces, but for now it is love at first spray!

I had a very similar experience. I got a Badger patriot that I had no success with, then an Eclipse that was hit or miss for me. Then I got the Grex, and life as a modeler has been good for me for a little over a year now! My wife hears far less of my extended vocabulary since I got mine.

Don't get me wrong, I know a lot of great Modelers who do phenomenal work with the Badger and Iwata, so I know they are good brushes, but I jut couldn't make them work. The Grex was just more intuitive for me.

At the last show I attended, I got the chance to test out one of the Grex pistol-grip brushes. Like both you guys I was amazed at the line control. I tried two of their brushes side-by-side. One was the standard depressed trigger and the other the pistol grip. Both had the same needle and nozzles. I wrote my name in cursive, trying to pull as fine a line as possible. Absolutely no comparison - the pistol grip was far and away the winner.

I have a Grex and love it! I've always hand brushed stuff and decided to try my hand at airbrushing, first try was an aztec, then I tried a Sotar, and finally an H&S and had issues with a heavy "trigger" finger. Sold my airbrushes and was about to give up when I saw the video for the Grex and figured I would give it one last try! The trigger style/ pistol grip is easier for me to control air/paint (maybe because I'm used to HVLP sprayers) and I have been much happier, just need to practice more LOL!

I have the side feed Grex and find it pretty easy to use. However, I do love my Iwatas and therefore have not used the Grex all that much. The Grex is a solid though. Nothing negative comes to mind.

I used a Badger 150 for a long time, then got an Iwata HP-C Plus and it does it for me. Pistol grip sounds interesting but I have a feeling it wouldn't do for me.
