Only bit left to do is the blue dome on the back. Obviously its all looking very flat for now, these are the base colours, I'll the shading and highlighting with mig pigments.

Thanks Frank! Be curious no more, update time! :D

Shaded the outfit using mig pigments, old rust, standard rust and bright rust for shading and to adjust tone

Image

Image

Image

Then I had a wet pallet of blue and white and just mixed up random shades to build the shadows and highlights of the back detail dome, and also detailed and dry brushed the metalic parts of the surrounding bits

Image

Image

Then I got the legs and tail glued on, haven't actually glued the arms down yet just in case I have to fiddle with the position of how he holds his gun.

Image

Image

Image

And speaking of the gun, I have glued the main two parts together and clamped it all down to ensure a good fit

Image

Next up I'll get the other gun bits glued on and prime it ready for painting

Thanks for looking, more soon :D

So I got to grips with Rockets large gun, after the glue had dried I took away the clamps and got the other bits of it glued in place.

Image

Then it was primed and gave it a base coat of a toned down reddish brown mixed up with vallejo acrylics, and painted the sight and tip with a mixture of silvers mixed with varying amounts of black

Image

Image

Image

Then I got out some mig pigments (black smoke, graveyard dirt, standard rust) and shaded and highlighted areas to add detail and interest as well as making certain areas pop a little

Image

Image

Image

So with that done next up I'll get Rockets arms and the gun glued together and thats him done.

Thanks for looking, more soon :D

Thanks guys :D

Will be a Groot update soon, unlike rocket he does need some filling, only because hes so damn big there are some joint gaps to made more 'invisble' though Dragon have done a good job at blending them in with the molding. So starting on that soon.

Wow, what a tremendous job you've done on this kit so far! :P

I have to say that I really appreciate all the in-progress photos you took! You have no idea (or maybe you do) how much that helps someone like myself who learns best through a visual medium. It's one thing to describe what you did, but it's another thing to SEE what you did.

Greatly appreciated and I can't wait to see what you do with Groot.

I'm seriously considering purchasing the Chris Pratt kit myself.

Thanks dude, appreciate the kind words. Yeah when I started modelling I always found wips with plenty of step by step photos the most helpful, and I promised myself when I was good enough that's how I'd do mine. Really glad to know its a help :D

Groot time!

Okay so I've started preparing the big fella for paint, got the head bits glued on and the little twig and I've shaved/filed down all joint connectors to ensure it goes together easily so I'm not having to put too much pressure on when I'm gluing painted parts together.

Image

Image

Image

The head has been glued on as there is no hindrance to painting so it makes no difference, and I have glued the hands on to the arms

Image

As you can see there is a gap that will need to be filled and dealt with, the legs aren't actually too bad, from the front the way the join has been done it just looks like branches going under each other

Image

But the backs of both legs have a section where detail has just been cut in half, so that too will need to be sorted

Image

Image

Combination of filling and possibly sculpting some more of the green vines to cover will sort that. And whilst I was dry fitting I couldn't resist getting the whole thing together

Image

Really cant wait to paint this monster! Next up I need to drill some holes to put in some cocktail sticks/skewers so I can hold it while I paint, sort out the filling and then I can prime.

Thanks for looking, mores soon :D

Okay been grappling with the big fella! One thing I did when I had him dry fitted was to put him on the base and I have to say I'm a little annoyed, the feet of Groot overhang the base. I'm sure its because they probably just have 1 standard size of base  , but I think whoever thought that was fine at Dragon really dropped the ball!

Image

So I'm either going to not use the base at all and just make a small foot plate base for Rocket to display them together, or put a new wider top on the base.

But for now I him up with some primer, then sprayed him with an undercoat of tamiya buff

Image

Image

Then I used some rubber black, which is like a blue shade black, to do some preshading in the recesses and around details. I love preshading I always find it a relaxing break to just freehand it on

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Tomorrow I'll mix up a greenish shade brown and spray it over, I'll keep the paint on the thin side so I dont obliterate my preshading but I may freehand on some more shading to accentuate it especially in the deep recesses.

Thanks for looking, mores soon :D

Back online! Was offline for nearly a month (my laptop died and unusual death and was ressurected by a cool technican, yep) and now I am in again and what to do first? Check out all the stuff I am involved in, so your work of cause!

The Racoon critter is way cool as I said before, the paintjob with the shading and lights done in "pastells" very well done and very new to me (I use this stuff only for dirtying) but your Groot, hell, this will be a Masterpiece, too! Shadings look superb now and I have no idea how they will look when finished. This here is really Masterwork, Hunter! Cannot wait to see more of cause!

Hi Frank good to hear from you was wondering where you were! Thanks, glad you got you laptop sorted :)

Time to get some more paint on the tree :) mixed up my main brown colour and sprayed it over Groot being careful not to over paint the shading

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Pleased with how that looks, the shading is still clear but not to in your face. Next up I mixed up a pale brown to dry brush over to bring out the wood texture and enhance the detail. I used enamel paints for this, in my experience they are far superior to acrylics for dry brushing.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Made a start on some of the face details, namely his woody teeth and eyes

Image

Image

Not sure about the eyes at this point, no way are they finished (still needs his large pupils), but I think my starting point may be a little too light. Next up thats what I'll be sorting out.

Yeah, it was a pain in the a... not beeing able to go online and what time went by searching for the mistake in the Laptop... But now, everything is fixed and I can see whats going on here! Haven´t wasted the time, had a sculpting rush the days and was busy like hell.

The Groot is really detailed and your paintjob brings it out in all the glory, well done. Any idea for a Base??

Thanks Frank, no bases for this one, they will be free standing models

More rootin' tootin' Grootin' !

I've used some graveyard dirt Mig pigment to accentuate some of the shading in the deeper recesses

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Finished the eyes, and just used some zombie green mig pigment to mark out a moss area and just see how it looks

Image

Now the fun bit, time to add moss. Mixed up some green and yellow acrylic with some white glue and a big pinch of woodland scenics fine turf, then I scoop clumps up with a cocktail stick and squidge it on press it down and rough it up a little, then sprinkle more fine turf over and blow off the excess.

I had no plan and wasn't working from a photo, just kind of put it here and there where it felt right.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

And I also used some more zombie green to add light surface moss shading and to add a green hint to some of the branches on him, although it hasn't shown up that great in these photos.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Okay and I'm calling him done! Spoke with my friend who commissioned it as a display piece to advertise the kit about the base situation. He basically said he'd prefer to have them as free standing models as its easier for him to display, so all thats left is to give Rocket a simple footplate base so he can stand on his own and then I'll take final photos.
