Well, basically, you can't copyright a car, but the court ruled that the Batmobile is a "character", and as such is under copyright protection.

dont get me wrong the guy building and saleing his own bat cars was wrong also.

There's a short story called "Batman's Helpers". In the story a bunch of thugs work for copyright lawyers going around New York beating up street vendors and destroying their wares if they were caught selling items like T-shirts or coffee mugs bearing copyright protected images. The title came from the main franchise that was subject to this sort of piracy at the time the story was written.

Why not? There are some stupid things about copyright law, but this isn't one of them. You should be able to protect original vehicle designs from infringement.
