Iron Man 3 1/9 Scale Mark 22 "Hot Rod"

#1 Post by Dr. Brad »

Hi all. I've finished yet another Dragon 1/9 Iron Man kit. This one is the Mark 22 Hot Rod. It's the suit that became the War Machine 2 and Iron Patriot in Iron Man 3. This version of the Mark 22 showed up very briefly in the final battle. As usual, the kit was painted with a combination of Alclad, Tamiya and Vallejo paints. Choosing the dark colour was tough, since Dragon portrays it as a dark blue. But other images show it as more of a gun metal, or dark, dark metallic gray. You can see what I chose, since the back story is that the paint job was inspired by the 1932 Ford Flathead Roadster in the first Iron Man movie (the actual vehicle was owned by director Jon Favreau). The feathering of gun metal to red worked quite well - it was the part of the paint job that made me most nervous). Oh, and it's also more or less the colour of the Hot Toys version.

The kit didn't come up with an open palm repulsor-firing hand, but I had an extra one from another Iron Man kit (the Silver Centurion), and I thought it looked better than the closed-fist version.

I've also included a group shot of all three Dragon Mark 22 kits that I've made. As usual, comments are welcome!

Thank Brandon! It's been fun building these and I've learned a lot from when I built the first Mark VII suit almost two years ago! Next up is the Mark 30 (or Blue Steel), which is really just a Silver Centurion with a blue/silver paint job. The back story to the Mark 30 is that it's an upgrade to the Silver Centurion, even though it's number is lower (the Silver Centurion is the Mark 33). Maybe someone on the production team made a mistake?
