I know that this is old technology... but

#1 Post by starmanmm »

Tomorrow I am hoping to sell some laserdisc at a local show... I have looked on Ebay, but I really don't see that there is much interest. So my question is... does anyone really care about these type of disc in the age of dvd's?

I sold a box of about 25 LDs a few years ago along with a 1989-ish Pioneer LD player for about 20 bucks. Several of the discs were Criterion, too! Unlike vinyl records, Laser Discs will not make a comeback and literally nobody cares about them.

It depends on what discs you have to sell. Some movies that were released on LaserDisc have yet to be released on DVD or Blu-ray, so they have some value, but not very much. The main problem is the lower resolution of LaserDisc as opposed to DVD and Blu-ray; they just aren't going to look as good on a 50-inch plasma screen. They still look best on an old analog tube set. At any rate, don't expect a lot of money for your LaserDiscs, no matter what titles you may have.

I did sell about 18 of them over the weekend, but those were concert ones. Thanks for the info.
Maybe it is to the trash for them? Who knows.

I hear ya. I've got a bunch of Godzilla VHS I want to get rid of.
But doubt they are worth listing on ebay. Probably not even worth trying to package them up for shipping.

Would it be possible to donate them to the local library?

Your local library would be unlikely to want any VHS cassettes of any kind; it's a dead format and VCRs aren't being manufactured anymore, so most people have no desire for the cassettes.

This discussion reminds me of something I once saw on an episode of "The Simpsons"; at the local landfill, they had specially designated areas for disposing of LaserDiscs & VHS cassettes, and an area "reserved" for DVDs! ;)

The only ones I see go for much are Japanese releases and concerts that haven't been released on DVD. I bought 3 $2000+ players for a around $30 each, like new, from Ebay about 10 years ago. Only kept some of my Japanese Godzilla discs, a few concert discs, the Star Wars films including the Japanese release of the Phantom Menace. Haven't watched any of them in years.

Hell, the good old LDs... Had nearly a thousend of them, mostly Criterion Collection or Special Edition (The TERMINATOR 2 offer, bound in black leather etc.), but sold most of them in times when I got good money for them. But nevertheless it was a sad experience to get rid of them, because I loved them all. But remember: First there was the VHS copy of a movie, than the VHS original (remember me buying ROBOCOP and PREDATOR from England for around Deutsch Mark 209 each!). After that, the Laserdisc was my fave, so I rebought ROBOCOP and PREDATOR new. Amongst tons of other movies. And what to say? Only one word: DVD. And guess what happened? Exactly! The same movies on Blue Ray disc again. But now for the last time! I have had Carpenters THE THING on VHS, Laserdisc, DVD and BR. AND as a VHS copy. How crazy must I be...
