Re: This may have potential ! - The Orville
What? We are four episodes in. Each one is better than the one before it. That is not a bad opening track record.
Try to keep an open mind, Ian.

Re: This may have potential ! - The Orville
And I think that's due to two major factors.XOFACTO2 wrote:I'm sorry but. The Orville does Star Trek better than Star Trek does Star Trek.
The first is that it's a parody, which means it has the advantage of being based on years worth of source material. The creative forces behind the show aren't really blazing a new trail as much as they are following in someone's footsteps. That's not a negative, just an observation.
The second major factor I see is having Brandon Braga as an EP on the show. His history with Star Trek is probably one of the biggest reasons why this show feels like a lighter version of ST:TNG.
For me though, the new ST:D (and that's an unfortunate abbreviation - sounds like a venereal disease) is trying to go somewhere different (maybe not boldly) which I why I'll continue watching.
Also, there's no denying the production values on ST:D are much better than The Orville.

S01E04 - 1st 20 mins were great - the rest sucked.
The humour is still its only consistent "quality point".

Well, it seems this show isn't your cup of tea.
(different strokes and all that)
At least you gave it a fair shot.
I would have done that with Discovery, but they only aired one ep, and that wasn't enough to do anything for me.

Strange... in Canada, ST:Discovery is still being broadcast on the Canadian version of Sci-Fi (called SPACE).tay666 wrote:At least you gave it a fair shot.

I watched Ep. 3 last night and the show's already in a new direction.
The first two episodes were merely back-story for the main character.

S01E05 - Pria
Still thought a lot of the acting was wooden (the guest star was better than the rest of the crew - shouldn't be surprised given I realised at the end she was Charlize Theron )
The running gag with the leg was hilarious, and there were several other laugh-out-loud moments too.
Hate to admit it - but Palicki is totally wasted on this so far, and Seth MacFarlane is the best actor/character in the whole thing! (amazing since I usually can't stand him).
Glad I watched this weeks (EASILY the best so far)
PS: What's up with the repeated "Open this jar of pickles" line? - a mistake or an intentional catchphrase carried through several episodes perhaps?

I suppose it was inevitable that they would have to do a time-travel episode.
At least it was handled well.
It was an interesting episode, and kept me guessing for most of it.
And yeah, I have been surprised by Seth's acting chops so far.

Between the leg, Mr Potato head and the high pitched voice bit, I was in tears a few times.
The effects work is better than any ST I've seen. I'm glad they went with models, catching lens flare every so often makes a difference vs CGI.
Plausible deniability.
Re: This may have potential ! - The Orville
Regarding the pickles, she's always bailing them out physically, it's just shorthand at this point, a take on the old 'can you open this jar for me, you big strong man'. I wouldn't be surprised if it evolves to him just pointing at something and blurting out 'pickles' in some emergency in later episodes.
I thought they were going to use the size/gender deal more in the boxing ring, but it just ended serious.

Re: This may have potential ! - The Orville
OK. Must just be me then.
I found the episode ridiculous. The story had potential but Seth is a terrible actor IMO and just can't vacillate between comedy and drama smoothly.
I liked the leg gag but didn't he wake up with it missing just below the knee?

Amputated just ABOVE the knee - but the one that fell through the roof was amputated at the upper thigh (crotch level).Nalissa2 wrote: . . . I liked the leg gag but didn't he wake up with it missing just below the knee?
May have been intentional, may have been an oversight
- (maybe the continuity person was drunk, inebriated, tipsy . . . . or . . . dare I say . . . legless?)

Yeah, it seems Star Trek: Discovery is available to watch free everywhere in the world except in the U.S.. But that's okay, I guess; I think The Orville is more entertaining anyway.derekc62 wrote:Strange... in Canada, ST:Discovery is still being broadcast on the Canadian version of Sci-Fi (called SPACE)...
The older I get, the better it was.

I'm gonna wait until the season is over then subscribe and binge. Nothing else on CBS that I want to watch anyway.Zombie_61 wrote:Yeah, it seems Star Trek: Discovery is available to watch free everywhere in the world except in the U.S.. I was figuring on the All Access crashing and burning and they'd eventually broadcast it in a ratings pinch or sell it to Netflix/Amazon down the line.

Re: This may have potential ! - The Orville
Hate that it moved to Thursdays because I simply forget about it and the DVR is recording two shows that night which is its max limit.
Luckily the episodes are now on demand so I got to see episode 3 and 5 last night.
Episode 3 (Baby sex change) - Good episode and never in a million years would I have guessed the outcome of the trial.
Episode 5 (Captain Pia) - ehhh it was ok and I knew from the internet she was not what she claimed so I was just waiting on the reveal and expected her to be a Krill or something. I agree that Ion storm was a great visual.
