Dinosaur Bashes ... Running Thread ... The BASHING Continues!!!

#1 Post by bucketfoot-al »

Here are a couple of puppies I'm doing simultaneously - both around 1/18 scale (BIG). The Quetzalcoatlus is a combination of the 2001 Hasbro Jurassic Park Pteranodon with the 2019 Mattel Quetzalcoatlus ...

... The Torosaurus combines the Tokugawa bellowing Triceratops head and lower legs or feet with Araki's Kaiyodo Dino Land Triceratops body and tail ...

... two pretty involved customs with lots of cutting, wire insertion and Quickplastic putty re-sculpting (Barad Dur - I was gonna do a simple head graft on the Toro, but nooooo - you had to post your own involved dino-custom photos, which made me 'step up' my game ) ...now the Toro is "all mixed up" between the two figures ..... The Quezt is much closer to completion than the Toro, which still requires pretty massive re-sculpting ... enjoy - I'll post updates as I can ...

Its great to see these bashes on this type or kit genre. Ive got an old resin Pteradactyl kit sitting in a box that is begging for attention.

We were visiting family the first 10 days of the month, then busy getting back to work .. last night I finally grabbed an hour or two in the studio ...

The Torosaurus head is now attached - note the wires - wanted to give you a view before I start "re-sculpting" with Quikplastic putty.

Also decided to 'combine' the tails from the figures, to get a nicer looking, longer tail. The 'transition' area between the two tails (SEGA figure's tail was inserted through the end piece of the Kaiyodo figure) as well as the underside of the tail will be 'beefed up' with Quikplastic putty.

BTW, the skin stamp that I am using to texturize the putty while its still soft was made off the hide of yet ANOTHER Triceratops figure (The fantastic PNSO large scale vinyl figure) ... so there's really three figures involved here ....

*UPDATE* - The Torosaurus is all puttied up. Once it dries, I will sand it and maybe Dremel it here and there, then prime it. Stay tuned...

BTW, barad_dur -

Here's a pretty large (around 30" long) resin kitbash of a Spinosaurus that I did back in 2014 - my last work before taking 3 full years off from modeling as I devoted myself to my Jolson Show (my 'other' hobby).

One of these days I'll get back to painting it ... the arms and head are the Shane Foulkes Spinosaurus ... the body is from a resin TRex done by some other fellow ... the sail is 100% mine ... putty over a shaped and cut tin sail 'skeleton' inserted into the back.

The rod protruding from the leg goes all the way up and into the back, then out the top of the back where I bent it before applying putty. It needed to be secured this way as the sculpt itself is quite heavy. BTW that block of wood weighs as much as the figure - and the rod goes all the way down to the very bottom of it. The resin base was secured to the wood with Gorilla Glue prior to drilling a hole for the rod.

Started on a new 'Dino Bash' today after a month away from the studio due mostly to work.

Marrying up elements of the SEGA Prize Shinzen Roaring TRex with the Griffon 'Master Fossil' TRex. I've bashed these two models before, but this bash is quite different from my earlier, static version. Also the combined elements are a little different.

This one will be in a running pose (will insert wire in the right leg and attach to a base). Here instead of bashing totally new arms (as I did before), I am keeping the finely sculpted Shinen arms, but attaching the 'Meat Hooks' from the Griffon model. Bonus feature: The Griffon TRex head has a movable lower jaw.

Trex is coming along. Right leg now attached. Mostly re-sculpting with putty left (plus the painting, of course). Its gonna be a nice piece.

Shinzen's sculpt is EXCEPTIONALLY muscular in the legs and tail, and the addition of that large EVIL-looking toothy head from Griffon (with extra-large 'meathook' hands) is gonna be cool ...

Well, "Scotty" is really coming along! (His 'name' just came to me as I got ready to make this post. Of course, "Scotty" is the world's most massively built, largest complete TRex ever found - up in Canada - its freakishly overbuilt, right down to the skull. Which is scary as he** ... kind of like this guy ...)

The neck has been puttied, the arms puttied (how about those 'meat hooks' folks?), the right leg attached with three wires and one main rod down the middle, secured through the upper back with interior putty (the tail hole comes in handy!).

You will note that the tail has been filled with plaster to provided some weight balance to the front 'additions'.

Next up is the puttying and texturizing around the connecting points of the right leg with the body ... oh this is gonna be cool, this is gonna be REALLY cool!!! :jam:
