Well, the city, and the plumbers are supposed to be here Tuesday morning. So hopefully that will be resolved and I can get my basement back in order.

Also got to work filling my shelves and cleaning/rearranging my room today.

Still some tweaking to do, and a few more to add, but it is nice to finally have most of my masks out on display, and not stuffed inside each other inside a tote.

It's gonna be a while until i get back to building shelves.
I need to concentrate on some shop infrastructure.
More specifically, I have to get back to work on my spray table.
Image

Tonight I finally got the craft paper dispenser built and added to the table.

Image
Image

I've had the roll of paper for like 3 months now. Just haven't gotten around to doing this. Finally got motivated because I got compressor for xmas. Which I now need to build a shelf for under this table. Which also means I need to get around to wiring this table, and the switches I want to have for each plug. Then I also need to add lighting to the table.
Hopefully I get all this done around the time I get my tax return, then I can order a spray booth for it, and I will be all set to spray paint with the doors and windows closed.

Just unpacked my compressor, put it together, and tried it out.
So, this weekend will be building it's home under that bench. And maybe even trying out the airbrush my daughter got me last xmas.
I've had a beautiful Iwata Eclipse just sitting in a box for a year now.

Very nice equipment!
You'll like the Iwata. I've been using the Revolution now for almost 10 years and love it.

Looking forward to learning how to use it.
Now I am going to have to buy some inks to add to my arsenal.

Well, got the shelf built. Still have to add some customization once I get the other supplies I ordered. (thinner, airbrush medium, cleaning cup, etc)

Also got all the wiring done for the switchable plugs on the table.
Once I get everything set up and installed, I will be able turn on the lights, airbrush, and vent hood with switches on the front of the table.

Thanks for sharing the step-by-step and the video Trev.

Looking great - the cleats were clever too - it's almost like you put some thought into this and pre-planned :)

"Tada!" indeed :D (and here's his lovely assistant . . . )

That toilet roll looks blimmin' HUGE though!

You would think, but really, not so much. I generally, have a rough idea what I want, then I see what I can do with the materials I have on hand.
Initially, I was just going to do a smallish shelf in the corner until I got to looking at how I built the table. Then I realized, trying to mount that and brace it was going to be a pain. So I looked through my pile, and found a piece of plywood that was almost long enough to sit on the 2x4 braces on either side.
And, away I went in that direction. Which will work out better in the end, because now I have space to store stuff for cleaning the airbrush and all that.
The cleats were something of an afterthought. I realized, once I put the compressor on the shelf that it could slide back further and make it hard to reach the regulator. So I figured a cleat would stop that. So, while I was at it, might as well lock it in completely. Just 4 pieces of scrap from my 3 scrap wood boxes, with 2 screws in each. Not hard to reconfigure if I ever end up with a different compressor.

Well, I have all this stuff to sort out and find a home for.

Image

I threw together a quick shelf to hold the cleaning pot.

Image

And I plan on using the rest of the day today to just play with the airbrush.
Get a feel for using it, cleaning it, and just generally getting to know it.

I can't really organize the rest of the stuff until I have some idea of what my work flow is going to be, what I am going to use, how I am going to use it, etc.
So for now all the thinners, cleaners, lube, and other stuff is just going to live in a small tote on the shelf under the table.
I have ideas on how to build an organizer to hold everything, but like I said, until I know what I am doing, that will have to wait.

Good luck with the airbrush !

I tried airbrushing and found that I just do not have the right skill nor the patience for the cleaning of it.

Coming along nicely. I love you have that much room to work, takes half the hassle away (sometimes).

Well, it was an experience.

Things went well at first. Then I ran out of paint. Made the mistake of trying to mix up some more, in the cup, without cleaning it first. Same color, but I took too long, and it plugged up on me.
Of course, I am playing with the worst paints to be doing this with. Craft store acrylics mixed with airbrush medium, and thinner.
After a few attempts, I finally got it cleaned out and working again. Took a complete disassembly to do it though.

Shot some more paint after that.
BTW - did you know, you can shoot the whole cup in about 30 seconds if you forget to put the needle back in the airbrush? Ask me how I know

It's probably going to take a bunch more sessions for me to get a good system down for a work flow. But that is part of the fun (this is supposed to be fun right?)
For now I am just sticking with doodling on paper, and base-coating models. After I get more familiar, I will play with actual techniques, and better paints.

Also, really glad I put the piece of corner molding on the top of the bench. Kind of thought I would need something to keep parts from rolling off when I had to take the brush apart. And I was right.
I had small pieces laying on there quite a bit today. Only had one roll across the floor. And that was because I was turned around watching TV when I took it off the airbrush. Learned my lesson there.

Practice makes perfect.
BTW - when using the thick paints put some thinner in first, it keeps the paint from clogging the bottom of the cup. ;)

Yeah. I've been doing thinner. Airbrush medium, paint, then mix it all up. Add more thinner or medium until it gets runny enough.

I haven't painted anything in 2 weeks now :(
But, that is because I have been working on infrastructure!
Finally got the lighting added to my spray table.

Image

Didn't realize how much of a difference it would make until I was trying to spray paint without extra lighting. Even with an extra desk lamp it was still too dark. So, getting the light added to the table became the priority.

After that, I turned my attention to storing and organizing all the stuff I use while painting.

Image

Before I added the light, I had already added the nails and screws to hold the funnels and cleaning brushes. But after the light, the first thing I did was the paper towel holder. Didn't realize how much I would need paper towels until I started airbrushing.
Wiping out the cup, wiping off the airbrush, cleaning the tip. Definite priority.
Then I took some scrap lumber, and drilled some holes on an angle to hold all my little bottles of water, thinner, cleaner, alcohol, and mineral spirits. I also have larger bottles of water, thinner, and cleaner that I store underneath.
Got that mounted up and marked. Now I just need to get some labels for those little bottles. Permanent marker isn't so permanent on cheap plastic.

Hopefully, next weekend I can now resume my adventures in airbrushing.
I've got some bottles of inks that I have had for a couple weeks now, that I am dying to try out.

All that is left now is to decide on a spray booth and get that ordered now that I have my bonus from work.

It's Trev's version of Batman's utility belt . . . not as portable, but he can still take on super-villains such as "The Driller", "Sculpeyface", and the bane of every modeller - "Mr. Seamline".

All while being "what his basement needs him to be".

Not too shabby.

PS: Where's the beer holder?
