Subject matter

#1 Post by centaur1 »

Contemplating my “return” sculpt, after being out of the swing for a few years

I am leaning towards a character from the game Doom. Certainly not a gaming sized miniature (although doom is not a board game, anyway) , but garage kit scale; around 1/6.

I’m hoping being a character from an iconic, 30 yr old game with a massive fan base, such as Doom, will have a crossover appeal to both the gaming and figure hobby markets.

If you think about it, the GK hobby’s staple characters have been done sooooo many times, and so well. As for me personally, I think it’s time to start reaching into other directions to broaden the target market

Love the creativity that went into the some of the Doom characters. Hybrids of demonic creatures blended with robotics, with so many varied textures, so it’ll be a time consuming piece

There have been a handful of Doom kits. 3-4 from Skyhook Models many years ago and seldom seen. There was another amazing sculpt of a Baron from Hell by someone here, but it was never completed and was eventually damaged beyond repair. I suspect there have since been a few kits from later versions of Doom but only the original Doom interests me as a consumer

Somewhere we have a very old thread titled something like "yearly Doom sculpture requests"

I have two of the original 4 Skyhook kits (bought used), the Cacodemon and the Spider Mastermind.

Here is a very small photo of the 4 kits when they were sold by Skyhook. I've talked to Skyhook and the molds are sadly long gone.

I found the old thread here. But when I click on it my anti-malware gets triggered and I'm not going to bypass it to see what's in the thread.

I am sure you would do a great job on doom characters.

But since you asked, would love to see you do a very large version of this dragon head on art station

Image

Hope the guy who rendered this and posted it on art station is ok with me posting it here.

Yes, the bottom pic, Doom Hunter, is among the two I’d narrowed it down to.

Centaur,

brother your Harryhausen kits are some of the most treasured kits I have in my collection, it would be great to see that type of work again , just my 2 cents,

Reviving an old thread…… been very busy with my new job and renovating our condo myself, so I’ve had little to no time to focus on my next sculpt. But the itch to do my next piece is getting stronger

Given my love of his creations, I am still contemplating the idea of doing another Harryhausen piece, but after the star ace toys came out…….I see no need now! Wow! Bar has been raised, as those are so impeccably done, I see they replicated my one million years BC / Tumak versus allosaurus kit of the promo still pose. Stunning piece.. Fantastic work on all of the Harryhausen kits. They even have a styrene Harryhausen Cyclops with the cage and victim kit ….. awesome to see that, as if it were the good ol days

If I do another Harryhausen piece, it will have to be a unique spin/hybrid/ playset idea, instead of going for yet another straightforward recreation of his movie models

After toying with the idea of what to sculpt as I reenter kit production, I just didn’t want to do something that has been done many times before, and I think the hobby would benefit from a new focus from some of the producers (but there is still certainly a demand for the garage kit classics)

I’m really into the game Quake (which is now on Nintendo switch) but there were apparently no statues currently available Apparently they were going to release the Quake Ranger (good guy/hero) some years ago but never did. It was very limited release, if it was released

I was considering doing the Ranger but that’s not really my style I love the type of prehistoric medieval character thatbis heavily bodied, muscular prehistoric sort of face
……… so the said I’m gonna go with the Ogre from Quake.

Perfect choice for what I like to sculpt! He is massive, heavily bodied, and muscular….
He has a grenade launcher in one hand, and a chainsaw and the other. I’ve always thought it was a fantastic character as I used to play the game on Nintendo 64

I wanted something not already overly done, as how many accurate cyclops, centaur, and Kong kits can you possibly have? (Nothing against the cyclops and centaur and Kong , and I love them all) but I see star ace has come out with some impeccable Harryhausen kits, so that pretty much caused me to “Drop the Mic”

And I think it’s time for some producers to change gears and start to try to blend the miniatures hobby, as well as a video game hobby subject matter into our beloved garage kithobby. It could possibly start to grow with some some new revitalized subject matter, and resulting crossover appeal.

I really agree with model club TV (Great show by the way ) in that we could benefit from looking into other facets help expand hobby to a new group of people, and the video game and miniature markets are thriving

And the miniaturemarket is exacly same skill set as the garage kit hobby, only with a different source of where they get their kits to paint. And many painters at the miniature market are true masters at painting. I think A crossover appeal is where I’m going to start focusing from now on

Perhaps I'm one of the few, but I fondly view the original doom monsters. Sadly I have only two of the four kits from Skyhook; the spider demon and the pumpkin (Caco Demon?) I also have the re-released white metal mini sets from whichever mini vendor did it back in about 2012.

In decades past there have been some wonderful attempts at Doom minis. Somone here did a fantastic Lord of Hell but apparently dropped the master before it was cast.

IMHO the original vintage Doom! monsters are a perfect line of kits. In fact a few days ago I saw a 3d print advertized of the Hero on top of a Cacodaemon. Looked awesome.

That’s along line of my thinking, yes

Fresh blood, …..something different to possibly appeal to another market of buyers

I was considering doom but Ive always enjoyed quake more… maybe next I will do a doom because I see it is apparently a much more popular game

there have been various doom figures and there’s an amazing, massive doom slayer statue that’s out …..and several doom “cartoonish” figures of the demons, and a few smaller doom slayer statues, but as you said, no “realistic” pieces of the demonic characters from the game.

When I was originally considering a doom character, I was going to do the “doom hunter” from doom eternal …..with the four Jetpacks, the horns, and the one eye. Very cool design ….but that would take a tremendous amount of detail work, especially to get all that machinery to look right

I love that design so much that that is more than likely going to be my second piece.

The quake ogre is from an older version of quake and images of it are so vague and pixilated. It’s gonna take a lot of interpretation, but I like that too; he’s gotta have three toes and three fingers and some tusks, but the game does show that much

thanks for the input
