.

I've been too "otherwise occupied" for the last few weeks to post the detail that I wanted to for the bulk of the season (S02E04 through S02E10).

Suffice it to say (for now) that this has been a total blast - pretty much EVERY episode was off-the-charts clever, entertaining, and WORTHY of the belonging to the franchise.

I'll be re-watching the ENTIRE season in a couple of weeks (it's THAT good!) and will add more detailed thoughts then.

That last episode of season 2 . . .

OK Spike - I'm now on the right thread. Watching Episode 3 of Season 1 tonight. (Wild guess: I still won't like the security officer chick. Hope she gets killed off :rolf: )

Hopefully she'll grow on you - she did me (and I did a COMPLETE "about face" on the actress playing Uhura).

OK - Episode 3 was more interesting - and Number 1 finally started to get a "backstory" (been waiting for that because she is the one "name" actress in the series). Robecca "Alphabetsoup" Romijn :rolf:

No, Spike, my dislike (hatred) of the diminutive "security officer" is unchanged after Ep 3. God, couldn't they have come up with a better actress? She makes my skin crawl ... its a PITA to have to suffer through her scenes just to see the rest of the cast/story ... :cussing:

Maybe that will change. Maybe not. But there's no way I know of to turn someone who is unattractive to you in every way into someone attractive, I fear ... maybe tolerance is the best I can aspire to ... maybe I just need a ... :alcoholic:

All I will say is . . . there are multiple reasons for her sometimes being stoic or seemingly stern/detached. She has quite the interesting background.

Yeah - did I catch something about her being a descendant of "Ricardo's" character (without dropping a spoiler). Maybe its partly that she's physically not cut out to be a "security officer" ... like I said ... we'll see how it goes ... :?

OK ... her backstory just got interesting in EP 4 ... now her character is less of a cipher.... maybe she'll grow on me ... 😉 ... "Pike Maneuver" ... good line ... 👍😀 ... I thought the Gorn were lizard heads ... didn't Kirk fight one early on in the original series?

Yarp . . .
  • 1) She is related. It gets expanded on later.
    2) Kirk's encounter was in the classic "Arena" (S01E18) - one of my very fave TOS episodes when I was a kid (still is a fave actually).

Episode 5 ... well, time off for some needed character development and some tongue-in-cheek, not-so-serious plot lines ... kinda like the original Trek used to do ... hmmm... enjoyed it quite a bit ... anything brewing between the nurse and the ship's driver? ... :rolf:

One thing my wife and I both agree on is that this Trek has the coolest sets and backdrops (space, ships, planets, etc) ... of any Trek we've ever seen ... CGI has come a loooong way, and the people running this show seem to have learned how to use it to advantage ...

translation: we'll keep watching ... :D

Agreed.

The best is yet to come (excepting S01E08) - TRUST ME!

From Season 1, E09 was my fave - let's see what YOU think when you get there.

Episode 6 (the kid ... you know the rest) was well-done & enjoyable ... this series has a real Star Trek original vibe to some of the story lines ... like this one ... they didn't always have happy endings ...

... so Spike, since you are warning over and over about Season 1 Ep 8, my wife wants to know if we should skip it? (Understand I have nothing against a weak story line, but I DO have something against any plot that starts channeling/mainstreaming any of the socio-political madness going on today ... thanks for your answer ... :? )

Or is it just "too silly" of a plot? (I cheated and read the first line of an online review of ep 8. Don't know any details - just that the premise sounds, well a bit silly. I'm OK with silly.... :D )

Unlike all of the others in Season 1, I only watched E08 ONCE. So . . . I can't remember exactly what I found annoying.

I'd been warned beforehand (by people whose opinions I trust) to not watch it at-all, but (for completions sake) I watched it anyways.

I found it a bit "silly", but don't think it had anything in the "madness" vein you mentioned . . . it was just a bit "odd", and disappointing compared to all the other Season 1 episodes (there's an unusual one in Season 2 as well - but THAT is GREAT - and SO funny in places).

I remember it dealing with the Doctor's Daughter (it resolved/closed that storyline arc) and a "fantasy Princess" setting. In ways, it reminded me of the TOS episode "Plato's Stepchildren" - because I felt embarrassed for some of the out-of-character things the actors had to portray (the Kirk/Uhura kiss excepted :) ).

As always, it's best you judge for yourself - maybe try the first 10-15 mins and then decide if you want to continue?

Regardless, as I intimated above, I'm confident that S01E09 will 100% wash ANY bad taste from S01E08 out of your mouth :)

Spike - both my wife and I thank you for nudging us to try SNW. :D

Episode 7 was cute and a bit unpredictable (to prepare for the silliness of Ep. 8?). We both liked it a lot - clearly in a bit of a less serious vein.

The Spock/Chapel routine was the highlight of the episode - clever, plus you know she really does like him, so it set up some ongoing tension for future episodes. I like the fact that this younger Spock has still not sorted out who he really is. More material to be mined there. All in all, we are both on board with this series now. I've gotten to tolerate the security officer. And the ship's driver (navigator) is a hoot. Great character. Can't wait til she gets her episode.

Capt Pike is "pitch perfect" as the keystone of this series. Great casting.

Capt Angel is undoubtedly going to make another appearance. A villain too interesting to be a "one off" character. Plus - the identity of the "prisoner" revealed at the end of the episode sets up future plot lines ....

Yarp - I agree with your sentiments . . . except the "thanks" . . . the only time I usually get those is from the teams that report to me - and I have to PAY them !

Anson Mount (as Pike) is the absolute standout star of the show - an amazing actor, and I cannot imagine ANYONE better suited to the role.

PS: Thanks - and you're welcome! :)

So we just finished the notorious "Episode 8" ... what to say ... best costumes of any Star Trek episode ... embarrassment at every appearance of Pike's "alter ego" ... otherwise pretty saccharine and predictable ... as I told my wife: "well, at least now they have tied up the loose ends of a plot line that clearly wasn't going anywhere" ... could have been a LOT worse ... think "Wesley Crusher" and how many seasons it took to get rid of him ... :mrgreen2:

Wow ... Star Trek meet Star Wars meet Alien meet Predator meet Jurassic Park ... welcome to Ep 9 ... :2guns: :eats:

Very well done, (also very predictable), the wife stopped watching during certain parts as she doesn't like that stuff, then resumed when it was over ... lost a main character ... very obvious (and intentional) telegraphing of the "designated Lt" early on, just like on the original Star Trek episodes ... :rolf: ... killer sets and FX continue to not disappoint ... actually warming up to the security officer character now ... may just be her HORRID hairdo that is turning me off ...

In short, a heckuva lot of fun (musn't think about no visible breath or bare heads in a frozen landscape ... must suspend disbelief ... I want to believe ... )

Ep 10 (Season 1) ... my favorite so far ... Kirk didn't resemble the old Kirk, but that actually made him more believable. Caricaturing you-know-who would not have been a credible move. They should have gotten an actor with a bit more or a physical presence, though. Meh - quibbles.

The story line was a VERY clever extension of the "Pike saw his future" theme, and excellently done. His #1 being arrested sets up a story line for Season 2 ... which starts tomorrow night in our home-away-from-home ... THANKS SPIKE!
